Excerpt from Teaching Literature in the Grammar Grades and High School There has been much criticism, during the past two decades, of the teaching of English literature in our schools and colleges. The earlier teaching of English was characterized largely by a type of instruction which tried to inspire pupils through their contact with the classics of our language, and to awaken in them an enduring love of both poetry and prose. The work being in large part interpretation and somewhat inspirational in nature, calling for much from the teacher and less than in most other subjects from the pupils, teachers in other subjects more susceptible to drill tended to characterize the instruction as "snap work." Stung by this criticism, teachers of English went for a time to the other extreme, substituted a detailed analysis of a few masterpieces for the more extensive reading which had formerly been the practice, and in time reduced the instruction to a monotonous and almost lifeless type of intensive study. Historical and mythological allusions were to be looked up, collateral reading was prescribed, notebooks were to be compiled, and the work was made so heavy, and often so uninteresting, that no charge of "snap" could be brought against it. As all questions instruction have recently come to be studied more in the light of a sound pedagogy, certain changes in our ideas as to desirable means and ends in instruction have resulted. One of these changes has been a marked reaction against a "grind" type of teaching in a subject so full of life and feeling as literature. Excerpt from The Teaching of English Classics in the Grammar Grades: Suggestions for Study, Questions, and Subjects for Written Exercises on Standard Literature A piece of literature worthy to be studied in school, all the classics contained in the Riverside Literature Series, every such piece of literature is a work of art, of fine art. It represents an idea, one fundamental idea, just as a painting, a sculpture, an oratorio stands for one idea. This idea is the motif of the piece. TO find what this motif is, is the primary purpose Of reading any piece Of literature. Sometimes this purpose is stated in terms at the outset, as in the opening lines of Evangeline; sometimes it is not discovered until the piece is partially or entirely read, as in the Christmas Carol. The kind Of motif is very varied. In Enoch Arden it is the noblest emotion of the soul, self denial; in Rip Van Winkle, it is the embodiment of an interesting story in the wonder-book, it is the reproduction Of some ancient legends; in snow-bound, the apotheosis of home life; but always there is the theme which must be discovered before the piece Of literature can be under stood Or taught. Excerpt from Everyday Classics Seventh Reader American Life and Literature for Grammar, Grades and Junior High Schools This volume of the Everyday Classics is prepared with a two-fold purpose: (1) to introduce young people to a part of that common cultural material which is now a part of' our inheritance, and (2) to put them into sympathy with some of the feelings and ideals which are in a special sense Ameri can. The importance of unifying our national life has not for more than a century seemed so urgent as in these last few years. The school, and particularly the literature read there, have long been recognized as among the most potent means of building such national unity. It has been our purpose also so to choose and arrange the material of the book as to provide for that real study and reflection, that growing consciousness of power that should come from the courses in the highest elementary grades and the Junior High School. The administrative segregation of the Junior High School from the grades below it should be based on a course of study differentiated, but not too sharply, from the work of the preceding year. One way of doing this is to bring like elements in the work into groups constituting larger units. Most of the selections in this volume will suggest to the alert teacher other books and articles on similar themes. Why this is so will be seen from an examination of the methods and aims employed in teaching the subject, and the effects it produces may be determined by an inspection of the products Of our schools. In Teaching Particulars, Helaine Smith engages her students, grammar school through twelfth grade—and any avid reader—in the questions that great literature evokes. Included are chapters on Homer and Genesis; plays by Sophocles, Shakespeare, and Beckett; poems by Jonson, Donne, Coleridge, Browning, Hopkins, Yeats, Bishop, Hecht, Dove, and Lowell; essays by Baldwin, Lamb, and White; and fiction by Flannery O’Connor, Dickens, Joyce, Poe, Tolstoy, Mann, and Kafka. Whether Helaine Smith is talking to young or older students, she shows how any devoted reader can uncover all sorts of subtle beauty and meaning by reading closely and by assuming that virtually every word and phrase of a great text is deliberate. The question-and-answer form of these jargon-free dialogues creates the feeling of a vibrant classroom where learning and delight are the watchwords. “After her forty years of teaching, Smith’s keen understanding of the literary canon makes her the perfect candidate to write this humorous and insightful book." —Foreword Reviews "Teaching Particulars is an exemplary series of literary conversations by a master teacher on a great variety of important, life-shaping books. The guidance is unfailingly humane, the essays thoughtfully presented by someone who cares as much for the written word as she does about her classroom and her subject matter. Her commentary on Hecht’s ‘Rites and Ceremonies,’ the poet’s complex response to Eliot’s ‘The Waste Land,’ ranks among the very best anywhere, as is true for her reading of Hecht’s ‘Devotions of a Painter,’ which has the further advantage of illuminating that work in light of Elizabeth Bishop’s profound meditation on painting in her ‘Poem.’ Reading Teaching Particulars makes me wish that all of my students could have had Helaine Smith as their teacher.” —Jonathan F. S. Post, Distinguished Professor of English and former Chair of the Department, UCLA “There’s simply nothing else like Teaching Particulars, a book packed with so much wisdom and practical advice about teaching literature that every instructor of grades 6 to 12—and of college classes, too—will want to get a copy right now. Even if you’re not a teacher, I highly recommend it. The love of books pulses through every page Helaine Smith writes, and her passion is infectious. She opens our eyes to the pleasures of reading in a way that few critics can, and she does it all in a book whose style is both elegant and friendly.” —David Mikics, John and Rebecca Moores Professor of English, University of Houston, and author of Slow Reading in a Hurried Age “Teaching Particulars is a bounteous resource for all teachers, as well as a pleasure just to curl up with and read away.” —Susan J. Wolfson, Professor of English, Princeton University “Helaine Smith is a genius of a teacher: witty, imaginative, precise, intuitive, and gracefully learned. Now anyone who opens her Teaching Particulars can have the rare privilege of learning from her how to read, in the truest sense. It’s never too late to be startled into delight by the power of language, and that is the experience offered on every page of this book. It’s a book not only for the schoolroom, but for the school of life.”—Rosanna Warren, Hanna Holborn Gray Distinguished Service Professor, The Committee on Social Thought, The University of Chicago

Excerpt from Language Lessons: Intermediate Grades In publishing, under the general title of Progressive Studies in English, a series of volumes intended for.use in American grade and high schools, the authors desire to say that it has been their aim to furnish-manuals of grammar and composition that shall prove eminently practical and helpful from the point of view of both teacher and pupil. There IS still such great variety of opinions among teachers of these subjects that no writer of text-books can hope to please all classes. The views of the authors of these books must be described in gen eral as conservative; they have adopted, however, with gratitude, the best suggestions of recent writers on the teaching of language regardless of schools of thought. It is believed that these books will be found to provide a minimum of theory with the maximum amount of practice, based on models of acknowledged excellence. It has been deemed wise to gather further discussion of purpose and method in language in the elementary grades into a small pamphlet, which the publishers will take pleasure in sending to all teachers interested. Excerpt from Language Lessons for Grammar Grades It has been the aim of the authors to present in this book the kind of language work needed to increase the thought power of pupils in the grades of grammar schools, to cultivate accuracy of expression, to develop a taste for the best literature, and at the same time to give such sentence forms for study as shall enable children to adequately express new thoughts as they are awakened. To accomplish these ends by the natural method, the sentence has been considered the unit of thought. Proper material for awakening thought, and for increasing facility in expression, is furnished by every lesson. To make the gain in language power steady and progressive, the lessons are carefully graded. In addition to the graded lessons on sentence forms, subjects of study embracing the varied kinds of composition work are freely supplied in their appropriate places to afford the opportunities needed for using proper language forms in expressing original thoughts.
