DOWNLOAD EBOOKPraise for the first edition: `An approachable and practical edition that will be welcomed by parents and carers alike. I know how hard it can be to find 'How to' resources for parents. Well here is a gem.' - Children, Young People and Families Parents of young children newly diagnosed as on the autism spectrum are often at a loss for ideas about how best to help their child. Playing, Laughing and Learning with Children on the Autism Spectrum is not just a collection of play ideas; it shows how to break down activities into manageable stages, and looks at ways to gain a child's attention and motivation and to build on small achievements. Each chapter covers a collection of ideas around a theme, including music, art, physical activities, playing outdoors, puzzles, turn-taking and using existing toys to create play sequences. There are also chapters on introducing reading and making the most of television. This updated second edition contains an extensive chapter on how to use the computer, the internet and the digital camera to find and make resources and activities, and suggests many suitable websites to help parents through the internet maze. The ideas are useful both for toddlers and primary age children who are still struggling with play.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKAcquiring aquatic and swimming competency provides a healthy physical activity and an important lifesaving skill for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Individuals with ASD often struggle with auditory directions, a primary means of teaching swimming. Research suggests that the implementation of visual aids during instruction provides concrete communication between the instructor and student and improves the student's ability to master new skills. A single subject research study was conducted during a 12-lesson swim program with an 8-year-old boy in order to test whether visual supports enhanced his ability to acquire swimming skills. The results of the study indicated that the use of visual aids during instruction helped the student gain a higher percentage of new aquatic skills than during lessons utilizing traditional instructional methods. The findings of this study are significant because swim lesson instructors and swim coaches may help swimmers with ASD advance their swimming abilities using similar types of prompts. Swimming provides an obtainable sport for the ASD community and helps decrease stereotypical behaviors associated with ASD. Moreover, the more proficient a child with ASD becomes at swimming, the less likely they are to drown. This study discusses the implications visual supports have on the swimming community, in addition to its implications on pedagogy for children with ASD in other extracurricular activities. Keywords :swimming, aquatic play, ASD, visual supports, visual aids, pedagogy.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis is an essential guide for parents and carers coping with children with autism. When Sarah Ziegel's twin boys were diagnosed with autism, aged almost three, she realized that there was very little practical information about what to do. When her next two children were also diagnosed with the condition, she was even more determined to put that lack of information right. This book is the result of Sarah's experiences of dealing with autism in the family. While covering personal aspects such as coping emotionally with a diagnosis, the book also tackles practical matters, such as education and the EHCP process, how to get help and support, and also considers the medical side of autism. Written by a former nurse, and full-time mother and carer, A Parent's Guide to Coping with Autism is a highly sensitive and professional guide and is the book you will want to reach for when faced with a diagnosis, or if you simply want to find out more about the condition.
