Blockchain implementation into a seafood company Today supply chains are facing the complexities of a globalized ecosystem where multitude of actors are involved. In general, companies do not know enough about the products they buy and sell as they lack from an end-to-end system for traceability. Blockchain can be the game changer to equip companies with a seamless traceable system in order to cross borders of their own organisation and track products from the upstream to the downstream of the supply chain. When implemented effectively, it connectsand enables efficiency, transparency and accountability among participating actors which tend to be disconnectedand lacking from trusted relationships. This project consist in the development of an end-to-end model particularised for the food industrywith traceability as the cornerstone. It has been developed a business case over a seafood company with the intention to serve as a prototype model to be exported and implemented in other companies of the industry. The report starts analysing the maturity level of blockchain and examining platforms and networks where it can be implemented by breaking down strengths and weaknesses of each. It concludes with a feasibility study of the developed solutiontaking into account economic, technical and scheduling considerations.

This book contributes to blockchain applications in food supply chain management from both theoretical and practical perspectives. By using the case study research method, it empirically investigates why and how food companies implement blockchain technology. Moreover, it proposes a conceptual framework based on the case findings and extant literature. The book provides empirical evidence to verify academic findings such as critical success factors and barriers. Furthermore, it identifies the implementation process to answer the ‘how’ question. Uniquely, it applies the innovation process model and the practice-based view (PBV) to studies on food supply chains and blockchain. Thus, building on the original model and theory, it enriches the theory on blockchain implementation, making it a valuable asset for all researchers and practitioners interested in blockchain adoption and food supply chain management.

Seminar paper from the year 2022 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,0, University of Applied Sciences Stuttgart, language: English, abstract: This paper deals with the analysis of the technological implementation of blockchain in the field of food supply chain. Blockchain has long been more than just the technology behind the cryptocurrency Bitcoin. Rather, the technology is now considered the real innovation, which experts believe has the potential to change business models, governments, and even societies. Above all, it is increasingly coming to the public's attention because of its many possible applications. Basically, the blockchain is a public register that enables users to collaborate in a trustworthy and transparent manner. The blockchain system connects all participants in a peer-to-peer network, so no intermediaries are required. In addition to the financial sector, supply chain management is also mentioned in various publications as an important application area for the technology. The food supply chain in particular is increasingly coming into focus due to the increasing complexity and internationalisation of supply chains, as well as the demand for transparency on the part of customers against the backdrop of sustainability. The goals of blockchain technology in the food supply chain include optimising the international exchange of goods and its documentation, minimising the need for middlemen, traceability, and real-time localisation of products. Retail giants, such as Walmart and Carrefour, recognised the potential of the technology early on and rely on IBM Food Trust to map their own product portfolio as transparently as possible.

[Foreword] The challenges in agriculture are rapidly increasing with the impact of climate change, land degradation and natural disasters. This is affecting the global food production and supply chain which has been aggravated due to Covid-19 pandemic and this calls for more resilient and sustainable food systems. The Asia-Pacific region which has the largest number of small holder farmers and is trying to meet the sustainable development goals of United Nations has lot of responsibilities to mitigate the challenges. In this scenario Blockchain Technology has come as a respite to contribute as one of the ways to mitigate the challenges. The benefits of Blockchain in agriculture include easy and cheap food batch recalls in case of emergencies, availability of the complete history of the product status, increased customer trust and loyalty, fairer payments, approved vendors, and proper compliance management. The global blockchain in agriculture and food supply chain market size estimated at USD 133 million in 2020 is expected to reach USD 948 million by 2025. Factors such as the increasing need to lower operational costs in financial transactions and the reduction of the number of layers required for data sharing and risk management and the regulatory compliances that automate and conduct only authorized transactions are driving the technology adoption. The key drivers to blockchain in agriculture and food supply chain market are an increase in demand for the agricultural produce output surge, the use of smart agriculture among the growers or producers, government initiatives to support modern techniques that can be used in agriculture, and rising concerns for food safety among the consumers driving the increase in demand for the transparency in the supply chain. Increase in the popularity of blockchain among retailers/ distributors is due to rise in the tracking and tracing of various food products. Data management and data aggregation are major challenges in the precision farming market. The lack of standardization of the communication interfaces and protocols may result in the misrepresentation of the data. The present volume is intended to collate the information on the status of blockchain in the Asian region with various case studies. APAARIRI is grateful to its member the International Association of Agricultural Sustainability for joining hands in this venture and sincerely acknowledge all the contributors for their excellent chapters on various aspects of blockchain. We also acknowledge the support of Dr KS Varaprasad in his meticulous support in editing of the chapters. We also hope that the present volume will bring more awareness on the status and challenges of blockchain technology in the region to various stakeholders and may help in increased application of the technology. --Ravi Khetarpal, Executive Secretary, APAARI [Contents] Foreword Foreword Preface Preface Chapter 1: Halal Supply Chain 4.0 with Big Data and Blockchain - Rika Ampuh Hadiguna Chapter 2: The Application of Blockchain in Food Safety, Production and Marketing: Taiwan Perspective - Tzong-Ru Lee / Lee-Chung Chen Chapter 3: The Challenges of Agricultural Blockchain: A Review of Policy Steering and Actions in Thailand - Nirote Sinnarong / Olalekan Israel Aiikulola / Thanakorn Sirisugandha Chapter 4: Using Block Chain & Internet of Things (IoT) in Agri-Food Supply Chain Traceability - Lin Jun Chapter 5: Blockchain Technology for Inclusive Development of Agrarian Rural Economy - Sharbendu Banerjee
