All organizations tell stories about themselves, through public communications, company lore, policies and daily interactions, modeling expected behavior for both insiders and outsiders. But not all organizations shape their stories with strategic intention, so that when external conditions change, the story changes too, modeling new behaviors that lead the organization forward. Strategic Narrative: A Framework for Accelerating Innovation, provides practical guidance and a concrete process for leaders and organizations to generate new narratives in transforming conditions. Visually engaging, the book communicates with original illustrations, worksheets and explanatory graphics throughout.

Communication is central to how we understand international affairs. Political leaders, diplomats, and citizens recognize that communication shapes global politics. This has only been amplified in a new media environment characterized by Internet access to information, social media, and the transformation of who can communicate and how. Soft power, public diplomacy 2.0, network power – scholars and policymakers are concerned with understanding what is happening. This book is the first to develop a systematic framework to understand how political actors seek to shape order through narrative projection in this new environment. To explain the changing world order – the rise of the BRICS, the dilemmas of climate change, poverty and terrorism, the intractability of conflict – the authors explore how actors form and project narratives and how third parties interpret and interact with these narratives. The concept of strategic narrative draws together the most salient of international relations concepts, including the links between power and ideas; international and domestic; and state and non-state actors. The book is anchored around four themes: order, actors, uncertainty, and contestation. Through these, Strategic Narratives shows both the possibilities and the limits of communication and power, and makes an important contribution to theorizing and studying empirically contemporary international relations. Despite progress made by prior research in understanding how information is used in strategic decision making, most studies are grounded on a similar, unstated assumption: information is homogeneous. We examine the influence of an important source of information heterogeneity: strategic information can be structured in narrative or non-narrative form. We develop a theoretical framework to explain why narrative information will have a greater likelihood of entering the decision making process and then, once there, why it will be more likely to influence key cognitive processes. Specifically, we propose that narrative-structured information will be more likely than non-narrative information to be granted attention, analyzed, recalled, and used in communication with other strategic decision makers. Moreover, we contend that the strength of narrative information will not be the same across stable and unstable decision making contexts.

The contributors to this exciting new collection, edited by Wendy Patterson, address the real and far-reaching affects of narrative in everyday life. Positing the power and intentionality of narrative--in short its strategic uses--the essays reveal how we use our ways of telling to reclaim, evaluate, and draw meaning from our experiences in an increasingly complex world. The contributors take up themes of narrative as resistance, the ethical dimension of narrative, the importance of narrative in the imaginary social worlds of children, the role of narrative in the construction of masculinity, the uses of narrative in therapy, and the significance of imaginary stories in personal narratives of traumatic experience. Strategic Narrative brings together diverse perspectives from a range of disciplines and takes the reader into compelling discussions of this often simplified and confoundingly theorized form of discourse.

Imagine, if you can, the world of business - without corporate strategy. Remarkably, fifty years ago that's the way it was. Businesses made plans, certainly, but without understanding the underlying dynamics of competition, costs, and customers. It was like trying to design a large-scale engineering project without knowing the laws of physics. But in the 1960s, four mavericks and their posses instigated a profound shift in thinking that turbocharged business as never before, with implications far beyond what even they imagined. In The Lords of Strategy, renowned business journalist and editor Walter Kiechel tells, for the first time, the story of the four men who invented corporate strategy as we know it and set in motion the modern, multibillion-dollar consulting industry: Bruce Henderson, founder of Boston Consulting Group Bill Bain, creator of Bain & Company Fred Gluck, longtime Managing Director of McKinsey & Company Michael Porter, Harvard Business School professor Providing a window into how to think about strategy today, Kiechel tells their story with novelistic flair. At times inspiring, at times nearly terrifying, this book is a revealing account of how these iconoclasts and the organizations they led revolutionized the way we think about business, changed the very soul of the corporation, and transformed the way we work.
