Excerpt from Story and Play Readers, Vol. 2 But, we, as teachers, must not allow ourselves to get into the habit of making the reading period a resting place in the busy day. We must remember that reading in itself. Is the most important of all subjects, because through it, language, our means of intercourse with all peoples in all subjects, is developed. Through reading we have our opportunity to teach our greatest moral and ethical lessons, and to build up, through the appeal to the emotions, the fine well-rounded character of the cultivated man and woman. Does not the teaching of reading really mean teaching our children to understand all the mighty thoughts of the world, whether they be expressed in music, or poetry, or art, or in the characters of the heroes of literature? In this second volume of his classic English Books and Readers, first published in 1965, H. S. Bennett continues the story down to the end of the reign of Elizabeth I. His purpose is to give an account of the total output of books and pamphlets in this period, irrespective of their qualities as literature. He reveals a picture of astonishing variety and fertility. The part of it which concerns the production of imaginative, philosophical and religious books is fairly well known; but by far the larger proportion of the output of the printing presses consisted of such diverse products as histories and geographies, moral treatises, translations from the Classics, legal and medical text-books, writings on sports and pastimes, seamanship, primers of instruction in languages and music, the great and famous corpus of travel books, volumes of ballads and verses, and cheap and sensational pamphlets on such topics as monstrous births, strange creatures, the evil practices of witches and the diabolical objectives of traitors. Besides showing how the printers, booksellers and their allies made this enormously diverse mass of material readily available to the Elizabethan reading public, the author examines as well the relations between writers and readers.

The fantastic has occupied the literary imagination of readers and scholars across historical, theoretical, and cultural contexts. Representations of the fantastic in literature rely on formal and generic types, tropes, and archetypes to mediate between depictions of “fantasy” and “reality.” Present in myth and folklore, the gothic and neo-gothic, and contemporary and mainstream fantasy, the fantastic reach stretches into many conceptions of literature over time. “Curious, if True”: The Fantastic in Literature presents recent articles by graduate students on the fantastic and makes connections across category, genre, and historical periods. Fantasy is used as an organizing topic, a genre that has always allowed for a broad interpretation of its meaning. From magic realism, to high fantasy, sci-fi to the Gothic, this collection furthers the reach of fantasy in the study of English literature. The authors value tradition in their reading and their writing but are not afraid to reach across genre borders to show their understanding of “the fantastical in literature.” The ideas presented span years and literary periods, texts and genres, and show the undeniable value of interdisciplinary study to expand perspectives in the field of English.
