"Autumn gales have pursued mariners across the Great Lakes for centuries. On Friday, November 7, 1913, those gales captured their prey. After four days of winds up to 90 miles an hour, freezing temperatures, whiteout blizzard conditions, and mountainous seas, 19 ships had been lost, two dozen had been thrown ashore, 238 sailors were dead, and the city of Cleveland was confronting the worst natural disaster in its history. Writer and mariner David G. Brown combines narrative intensity with factual depth to re-create the events of the "perfect storm" that struck America's heartland."--Publisher's description

Excerpt from Myths and Legends of the Mississippi Valley and the Great Lakes Around Michilimackinack was the land of Great Hare. There, amongst the green islets, under the cool shade of wide spreading trees, where fish leaped above the rippling waters, he made the first fish net. He made it after watching Spider weave a web for catching flies. It was Wenibojo who, in Ojibwa land, discovered the wild rice and taught tliei Indians to use it. He first pointed out the low ggascsn1§lag1ds 1n the lakes, waving their bright green '1éavés'éfia (spikes of yellowish-green blossoms. He showed them how to cut paths through the wild-rice beds before the grain was ripe, and later, to beat it into their canoes. He told them always to gather the wild rice before a storm, else the wind would blow it all into the water. Therefore the Indians use wild rice in all their feasts. They even taught the white men to use it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Highways and Byways of the Great Lakes This book is a record of a search for the picturesque and the characteristic in nature and life in the Great Lakes region. For the most part I have kept to the immediate Vicinity of the lake shores, but there are several digressions a considerable distance inland. I did not, however, in any instance, go outside of the district that is directly tributary to these vast fresh water seas. Excerpt from The Poetry of Catullus The favourites of the gods are released from life before they have had time to outstay their youth. The tribute to those who died young is tribute to the youth which they never lived to lose - ih part, no doubt, objective, but in part also subjective, and prompted by the thought expressed in that line of Thackeray: Oh, the brave days, when we were twenty-one! Up and down the Great Lakes, wherever captains and seamen met, one of the chief topics of conversation is still the Great Storm-the worst disaster in Great Lakes history. By men of the Lakes, November 9, 1913 will always be remembered as Black Sunday, for it brought death to hundreds of their companions and destruction to scores of ships of the Lakes fleet. Each man who survived the Storm has a fascinating story to tell. Freshwater Fury is the first comprehensive history of the Great Storm. Author Frank Barcus, who has met and talked with many survivors during his trips on Lakes freighters over the past twenty years, presents here their vivid eye-witness accounts. The many drawings, maps, and diagrams executed by the author add pictorial interest to the story of this dramatic struggle between men and the elements.
