Hey, Everyone! I’m Jessie Gussman and I write love stories. I guess some people think that a writer’s life is glamorous. Especially a romance writer. This book was written to disabuse that notion. I’m kidding. That’s not the purpose of this book, although it’s a definite effect. It’s true that I’m a USA Today bestselling author, which, I have to admit, surprises me as much as anyone. My husband and I also own a trucking company. We have two twenty thousand bird free-range laying houses (our eggs are probably in your grocery store!), raise grass-fed beef cattle, homeschool our kids and are on a first-name basis with the Game Warden and the state police (mostly because of the kids and not really my husband). I frequently cook for strangers, occasionally hide from my family and own more fire extinguishers than the average person (for good reason). Sometimes, when I sit down at my computer, instead of writing the next chapter in my latest romance, I write about my life. Sometimes it’s fun. Sometimes funny. Sometimes it’s heartbreaking and sometimes you just see life through the eyes of a farmer, growing older every day and maybe just a little wiser. We do a lot of laughing, some crying and every day is a learning experience wrapped in the love of God and held in His hand. That’s what I share with you in this book. Thanks so much for spending some time with me today! Love, Jessie Reviews for Stories from Jessie Gussman's Newsletter: ★★★★★ "Jessie is an author that can make getting bunted by a cow or helping a cow have a calf interesting and educational. These short stories relate directly to actual events in the author's life. They are real events, and while humor is injected into the stories, there are tragic everyday occurrences that impact our dwindling animal life. The author believes deeply that we are both unaware and cruel in our treatment of the various species, and the unawareness could lead to serious consequences. The author also is aware that the targeted age group for these stories is five through seven years and believes that it is not for him to teach children their values. He believes that responsibility rests with the parents. Therefore, the stories are written in such a way to be positive, and humorous. At the same time, the author attempts to capture the strength behind the concept of helping one another, and the role of friendship in any situation involving the need for assistance from a loved one, a neighbor, or an acquaintance. The author does not seek literary recognition. Rather, he is objective in realizing what impact modern technology has played in denying the youth of our world from enjoying those long walks to distant fishing spots, the consequences of television overdose, and the impact of the loss of innocence at younger ages. The unresolved question is: Whatever happened to the cookie and glass of milk at the end of the school day?

The industrial expansion of the twentieth century brought with it a profound shift away from traditional agricultural modes and practices in the American South. The forces of economic modernity—specialization, mechanization, and improved efficiency—swept through southern farm communities, leaving significant upheaval in their wake. In an attempt to comprehend the complexities of the present and prepare for the uncertainties of the future, many southern farmers searched for order and meaning in their memories of the past. In Southern Farmers and Their Stories, Melissa Walker explores the ways in which a diverse array of farmers remember and recount the past. The book tells the story of the modernization of the South in the voices of those most affected by the decline of traditional ways of life and work. Walker analyzes the recurring patterns in their narratives of change and loss, filling in gaps left by more conventional political and economic histories of southern agriculture. Southern Farmers and Their Stories also highlights the tensions inherent in the relationship between history and memory. Walker employs the concept of “communities of memory” to describe the shared sense of the past among southern farmers. History and memory converge and shape one another in communities of memory through an ongoing process in which shared meanings emerge through an elaborate alchemy of recollection and interpretation. In her careful analysis of more than five hundred oral history narratives, Walker allows silenced voices to be heard and forgotten versions of the past to be reconsidered. Southern Farmers and Their Stories preserves the shared memories and meanings of southern agricultural communities not merely for their own sake but for the potential benefit of a region, a nation, and a world that has much to learn from the lessons of previous generations of agricultural providers.
