Whether this little volume will find sufficient patrons to defray the cost of its production is at least doubtful. The writer whose essays it contains lived in obscurity and will never be popular. But he possessed a fine intellect, however frustrated by circumstances; he belonged to an illustrious family; and it is well to let the public have access to the opinions of a brother of Cardinal Newman and of Professor Newman, a brother who took his own course, as they did, and thought out for himself an independent philosophy. All Charles Robert Newman's writings that are known to have been printed, appeared in the Reasoner, edited by Mr. George Jacob Holyoake, at various dates during 1860-61. With trifling exceptions they are all reprinted in this collection. Mr. Holyoake has kindly supplied a brief account of the atheistic Newman, and Mr. J. M. Wheeler has gathered all the information that is obtainable as to his life and personality.

Agnes of Rome was born to a wealthy family in ancient Rome, and was executed at a young age, having expressed her devotion to Christianity in the pagan Roman society. This biography was published in France in the 19th century by an anonymous author, and soon after translated to English. A narrative of Saint Agnes' life is given, with a further discussion of pertinent events in the centuries following her death. Together with the known incidents in the sainted Agnes' short life, an appendix assesses the authenticity and veracity of the Acts of St. Agnes, a document which appeared in the 5th century AD. The author explains the various references to Agnes in Latin, and the relics attributed to her. By the 4th century AD, Agnes had been venerated as a saint, and through the ages various artworks, icons and paintings have been created in her image. She is considered the patron saint of virgins, girls and chaste conduct, and a feast on January the 21st commemorates her life.
