The History of the Book in South Asia covers not only the various modern states that make up South Asia today but also a multitude of languages and scripts. For centuries it was manuscripts that dominated book production and circulation, and printing technology only began to make an impact in the late eighteenth century. Print flourished in the colonial period and in particular lithographic printing proved particularly popular in South Asia both because it was economical and because it enabled multi-script printing. There are now vibrant publishing cultures in the nation states of South Asia, and the essays in this volume cover the whole range from palm-leaf manuscripts to contemporary print culture.

‘Boundaries, Dynamics and Construction of Traditions in South Asia’ explores the dynamic constructions and applications of the concept of ‘tradition’ that occurred within the South Asian context during the ancient and pre-colonial periods. Written in the twelfth century, the Naisadhiyacarita (The Adventures of Nala, King of Nisadha) is a seminal Sanskrit poem beloved by South Asian literary communities for nearly a millennium. This volume introduces readers to the poem’s author, his reading communities, the modes through which the poem has been read and used, the contexts through which it became canonical, its literary offspring, and the emotional power it still holds for the culture that values it. The study privileges the intellectual, affective, and social forms of cultural practice informing a region’s people and institutions. It treats literary texts as traditions in their own right and draws attention to the critical genres and actors involved in their reception.
This book presents an analysis of the current state and the future needs of American studies of India, Pakistan, Ceylon, Afghanistan, and Nepal. Although most of the developmental goals set immediately after World War II by the scholars then working in South Asian area studies have been amply fulfilled, a new stocktaking and blueprint for the future was felt to be necessary. In addition to meeting this requirement, Resources for South Asian Area Studies treats the more general needs of the field and discusses the individual papers, which were read at a plenary conference held in New York early in 1961. One of the purposes of this volume, then, is to survey the current resources and needs in the field of South Asian area studies, and this is a primary interest of the convener of the conference, the Association for Asian Studies' Committee on South Asia, whose chairman, Richard D. Lambert, edited this book. The other purpose is more specialized, and reflects the specific interest of the United States Office of Education, the sponsor of the conference. Under the National Defense Education Act this office is explicitly charged with the development of skills among Americans in the vernacular languages of the region. A companion volume to this one, edited by W. Norman Brown and entitled Resources for South Asian Language Studies, concerns the development of linguistic material and personnel. The present volume is oriented more toward the integration of those materials into area studies proper; hence the discussion of this problem that runs through each of the papers. The book should be of interest to all those concerned with the emergence from parochialism and the development of an international, particularly non-Western aspect of American higher education.
This volume addresses cultural and literary narratives of trauma in South Asian literature. Presenting a novel cross-cultural perspective on trauma theory, the essays within this volume study the divergent cultural responses to trauma and violence in various parts of South Asia, including Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Afghanistan, which have received little attention in literary writings on trauma in their specific circumstances. Religious imaginary is a way of conceiving and structuring the world within the conceptual and imaginative traditions of the religious. Using religious imaginary as a reference, this book analyses temporal ideologies and expressions of historicity in South Asia in the early modern, pre-colonial and early colonial period. Chapters explore the multiple understandings of time and the past that informed the historical imagination in various kinds of literary representations, including historiographical and literary texts, hagiography, and religious canonical literature. The book addresses the contributing forces and comparative implications of the formation of religious and communitarian sensibilities as expressed through the imagination of the past, and suggests how these relate to each other within and across traditions in South Asia. By bringing diverse materials together, this book presents new commonalities and distinctions that inform a larger understanding of how religion and other cultural formations impinge on the concept of temporality, and the representation of it as history.
