The greatest columns and profiles by the bestselling coauthor of All the Devils Are Here. What's it like to be a top tobacco executive when your kid asks you about smoking? How did a young liberal arts major become the hottest tech-stock analyst of the '90s, and why did he self-destruct? How did one family's dysfunction change the media landscape? Some people think business journalism is all about balance sheets, income statements, and earnings per share. But if you want to answer the really interesting questions-about heroes and hucksters, visionaries and madmen, and other larger-than-life characters-you need a reporter like Joe Nocera. For more than twenty-five years Nocera has shed new light on the giants of the business world-Warren Buffett, T. Boone Pickens, Bob Nardelli-as well as on the less famous but equally fascinating. He builds stories around their motivations, personalities, and deepest characters. And instead of just pigeonholing them as good guys or bad guys, he explores the gray areas in between.

Good Guys, Wiseguys, and Putting Up Buildings is an engaging memoir about one man's career in construction--rising to the top of an industry renowned for crime, corruption, violence, physical danger, and the chronic risk of financial catastrophe. Starting in the Navy Seabees at the end of WWII, Samuel C. Florman made his way as a general contractor in New York City through the period of explosive development, private exuberance and the historic growth of publicly supported housing--all amidst the rise of the notorious Mafia families, and evolution of the Civil Rights Movement. His storied career brought him into contact with a variety of personalities: politicians and civil servants, developers and technocrats, saintly do-gooders and corrupt rapscallions. Along with the rousing adventures there were satisfactions of a different sort: the enchantment of seeing architecture made real; the pride of creating housing, hospitals, schools, places of worship--shelter for the body and nourishment for the spirit.

How to live confidently for Jesus in today's world. The church used to be recognized as a force for good, but this is changing rapidly. Christians are now often seen as the bad guys, losing both respect and influence. In our post-Christian culture, how do we offer the gospel to those around us who view it as not only wrong but possibly dangerous? And how do we ensure that the secular worldview does not entice us away with its constant barrage, online and elsewhere, of messages about self-determinism? Author Stephen McAlpine offers an analysis of how our culture ended up this way and explains key points of tension between biblical Christianity and secular culture. He encourages Christians not to be ashamed of the gospel as it is more liberating, fulfilling and joyful than anything the world has to offer. He also offers strategies for coping in this world, with its opposing values, and for reaching out to others wisely with the truth.

"Jimmy Blackburn grows up in the Midwest believing the things that adults tell him. He questions his teachers and they lie to him. He questions his parents and his father beats him. He questions the world and it hurts him. And so Jimmy Blackburn becomes a killer. In this novel we meet many of Blackburn's twenty-one victims. They include law enforcers, writers, adulterers, auto mechanics, and other liars. This is an exceptional novel, at once riotously funny and searingly potent: a vision of America through the eyes of the central bogeyman of our culture."--Publisher.

HEALTH BACKWARDS: AN ORIGINAL LOOK FROM A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE is my attempt to take Albert Einstein's advice. He suggested regarding old challenges in new ways. I have done just that. I would like to share with you what I have learned as a result of accepting this challenge. I will be the first one to admit there’s a lot of stuff I do not know; however, I do believe I know something everybody needs to know. I share it in this book. Healthy living for decades did not work for me. I was 40 years old when my doctor told me I had a life expectancy of 38-42. With this news, I decided to use my Bachelor of Science degree brain and start experimenting on myself. I figured I was already living on borrowed time. I started asking different questions. These different questions led to different answers, which gave me different results. Using the same previous methods that did not work for me in the past, now worked for me because of the new information I applied. I ended up, so far, living fourteen plus years past my expiration date. I also believe I stumbled on the real reason why some people are healthy, and some are not. My book explains why and how I think we are looking at chronic inflammation backwards. I think it is not the problem but the warning light of something else having gone wrong. I think chronic inflammation is our body’s last-ditch effort to protect us by what is coined intelligent disobedience. This intelligent disobedience is necessary because of our unhealthy bodies failing to protect and sort for us. I have called this concept the Defensive Individual Shield Hypothesis (DISH). In this book I guide my readers through how I figured out DISH, what it does, how it affects us, and what I did about it when it was not working. This book is my journey. It shares what I’ve done and what I have learned. It is not intended for medical advice. But with that being said, I have a passion to help others by sharing what I have learned. I think it is information everyone needs to know. My naturopath doctor told me, "What you are figuring out is going to force science to catch up with you." So I ask you... What if...we don't know what we don't know We know germ theory. We know the benefits of a healthy gut. We know body meridians. We know nutrition matters. DO we know we are still missing something? What if...DISH is the missing piece? It made what didn't work now work for me. It helped my body to do its job. It eliminated many symptoms. It gave me hope.
