The influence of intellectuals is not only greater than in previous eras but also takes a very different form from that envisioned by those like Machiavelli and others who have wanted to directly influence rulers. It has not been by shaping the opinions or directing the actions of the holders of power that modern intellectuals have most influenced the course of events, but by shaping public opinion in ways that affect the actions of power holders in democratic societies, whether or not those power holders accept the general vision or the particular policies favored by intellectuals. Even government leaders with disdain or contempt for intellectuals have had to bend to the climate of opinion shaped by those intellectuals. Intellectuals and Society not only examines the track record of intellectuals in the things they have advocated but also analyzes the incentives and constraints under which their views and visions have emerged. One of the most surprising aspects of this study is how often intellectuals have been proved not only wrong, but grossly and disastrously wrong in their prescriptions for the ills of society -- and how little their views have changed in response to empirical evidence of the disasters entailed by those views.

As a result of centuries-old interactive internal and external cultural and economic factors, developing countries suffer from illiteracy, poverty, corruption, oppression, and other ills. These have led and continue to lead to the disruption of the natural flow of socio-political and economic development. In the developing countries, there is inadequate grasp of politics, which permeates all social relations, and is a way to gain and wield influence with a view to achieve certain goals. In order for the developing people to be able to achieve progress in nation-building, political reality, and dynamism of social phenomena, these concepts should be recognized. This should be accompanied by democratization, strengthening of civil society and exercise of critical thought.

Based on observed dynamic interaction among natural, socio-cultural and political factors, the main proposition adopted in the book is that politics are inherent in all human relations, that thought is constrained by interacting subjective and objective variable factors, that intellectual conservatism cannot catch up with dynamic intellectual reality, that ideology restrains intellectual emancipation, and that intellectual suppression is inherent in socio-political relations among individual and collective entities.

This book is a collection of descriptive and analytical articles. These, which were recently written, deal with socio-political developments at the local, regional and global levels. It is the view of the author that forward or backward change is caused by seen and unseen dynamic socio-political, cultural, psychological and ideological factors, that full-freedom is fiction, that politics is a major driving force in society, and that, to improve human relations, there is a need for better communication between cultures. Dynamics of change implies that all factors are relevant in the explanation of events and developments. The author maintains that reality is wider than explanation and that, in order to help in the achievement of peaceful existence, there is a need to narrow socio-economic gaps nationally and internationally. The author maintains that, in order for peoples to know their miserable reality, they need to deal with reality frankly, honestly and directly. It is very difficult to achieve progress and awakening without democratization and the establishment justice and civil society.

Ibsen’s plays rank among those most frequently performed world-wide, rivaled only by Brecht, Chekhov, Shakespeare, and the Greek tragedies. By the time Ibsen died in 1906, his plays had already conquered the theaters of the Western world. Inviting rapturous praise as well as fierce controversy, they were performed in Europe, North America, and Australia, contributing greatly to the theater, culture, and social life of these continents. Soon after Ibsen’s death, his plays entered the stages of East Asia - Japan, China, Korea - as well as Africa and Latin America. . But while there exist countless studies on Ibsen the dramatist and the significance of his plays within different cultures written mainly by literary scholars, none of them examine the ways in which Ibsen's plays were performed, or the impact of such performances on the theater, social life, and politics of these cultures. In Global Ibsen, contributors look at the way performances of Ibsen's plays address problems typical to modern societies all over the world, including: the inferior social status of women, the decay of bourgeois family life and values, religious fundamentalism, industrial pollution and corporate cover-up, and/or the loss of and search for identity.

As nation-states in the Northern Hemisphere experience economic crisis, political corruption and racial tension, it seems as though they might be 'evolving' into the kind of societies normally associated with the 'Global South'. Anthropologists Jean and John Comaroff draw on their long experience of living in Africa to address a range of familiar themes - democracy, national borders, labour and capital and multiculturalism. They consider how we might understand these issues by using theory developed in the Global South. Challenging our ideas about 'developed' and 'developing' nations, Theory from the South provides new insights into key problems of our time.
