Bobs, beards, blondes and beyond, Hair takes us on a lavishly illustrated journey into the world of this remarkable substance and our complicated and fascinating relationship with it. Taking the key things we do to it in turn, this book captures its importance in the past and into the present: to individuals and society, for health and hygiene, in social and political challenge, in creating ideals of masculinity and womanliness, in being a vehicle for gossip, secrets and sex. Using art, film, personal diaries, newspapers, texts and images, Susan J. Vincent unearths the stories we have told about hair and why they are important. From ginger jibes in the seventeenth century to bobbed-hair suicides in the 1920s, from hippies to Roundheads, from bearded women to smooth metrosexuals, Hair shows the significance of the stuff we nurture, remove, style and tend. You will never take it for granted again.

This Report presents an overview of European initiatives to make the identification, assessment and recognition of learning which takes place outside formal education and training institutions i.e.non-formal learning, more visible. Its invisibility is increasingly perceived as a problem affecting competence development at all levels from the individual to society as a whole. This Report is based on fourteen national reports commissioned 1997-1999 and includes information from other sources including the EU. Following the introduction, the report is in five chapters. Chapter 2 looks at basic theoretical issues such as the character of non-formal learning and the political implications of setting up systems in this area. Chapter 3 outlines initiatives and developments in the member states. Chapter 4 presents and discusses initiatives at the EU level, focusing on the white paper on teaching and learning and on experiences from the Leonardo da Vinci programme. Chapter 5 analyses the previous chapters and concluding remarks are presented in Chapter 6. The conclusion looks at why there has been a sudden burst of activity and interest in questions linked to non-formal learning and at how the positive elements of this activity can be supported.

"Alan Coppin is a rare individual. His experience and insight span private and public sectors, charities, and the Armed Forces. The vital importance of human capital is the thread which has bound all this together. His book is a rich gold mine of data, research, wisdom and anecdote." —Sir Gerry Grimstone, chairman of Standard Life, deputy chairman of Barclays, non-executive director of Deloitte and lead non-executive director at the Ministry of Defence In this new book Alan Coppin, a leader with extensive cross-sector experience, draws on discussions with leaders in the public and private sectors, as well as from charities, the military and trade unions to offer you the ideas and practical applications that have proved effective in ensuring human capital is properly valued and managed. Most business decisions are based on lag data – historical reporting of what happened last month, last quarter or last year. It’s solid, real and comforting. Unfortunately, it’s also not a very good indicator of what might happen next. The best lead data – information with genuine predictive power – comes from understanding your people and what they can deliver. All major organizations claim that people are their greatest asset and yet, at the first sign of problems, the first action they take is to fire people. Why, because employees are also an organisation’s biggest liability in terms of cost – and their cost is much easier to quantify than their value. But, like any asset, human capital will only deliver its full value if it is properly understood, measured and managed. The author offers you the tools you need to take the issue beyond the HR department and satisfy the number crunchers in the boardroom. With their help, you can make human capital part of the normal financial metrics essential to running a successful organisation. Isn’t it time you understood and managed the metrics that can predict your organization’s future rather than relying on those that simply report on its past?
