In this autobiographical graphic novel, Beldan Sezen revisits the various instances of her coming of age, and her coming out as lesbian, in both western and Islamic cultures (as the daughter of Turkish immigrants in western Europe)—to friends, family, and herself. Through a series of vignettes, she navigates the messy circumstances of her life, dealing with family issues, bad dates, and sexual politics with the raw honesty of a young woman looking for happiness. Snapshots is an amusing, thoroughly modern take on dyke life and cultural identity. Beldan Sezen's previous graphic novels were Zakkum and #GeziPark .

A snapshot freezes a moment in time and serves to remind us of something meaningful to our lives, whether it is an event, a scene, a story, or a message. In Snapshots, author Earl Fashbaugh presents a photo album in words of all sixty-six books of the Old and New Testaments, revealing the essential elements of each scriptural message and inviting us to explore our own personal meaning as we draw closer to God and his Word. As our society and our lives grow more complex, simple, meaningful messages become more and more important. Scripture provides this on a deeply personal level, and while we can learn so much from Bible scholars and those who have studied hard in order to serve as our pastors, ministers, and priests, we must take it upon ourselves to sit quietly and read, pray, and contemplate how the Bible's lessons apply to our everyday lives. Every book in the Bible contains practical lessons on daily living. Snapshots reflects on each book in turn, studying applications in society, church, and family; it serves as an indispensable daily devotional for those of us looking for guidance from the Holy Spirit and a unique, personal connection to the Lord.

Snapshots is a kind of verbal photo album that uses the sixty-six books of the Bible as a catalyst to move our thoughts to each of these portions of scripture. Just as a snapshot of days gone by does not capture the entire event, neither does this devotional expand the entire meaning or application for any single book in the Bible. Taking a picture, or snapshot, of a moment does not really do justice to a beautiful scene we witnessed during our vacation, but it puts a stake in our mind. The picture may even suggest that we have experienced something grand and we want to go back and visit the vacation spot again. We will always find something new when we revisit scripture. The Bible is relational in style because it speaks to us in a very personal way. The author provides his own verbal pictures of the first part of each book, illustrating the application according to his experience. Once we begin taking our own snapshots of the Bible, we charter the important scenes that relate to us at that particular time in our life. Every day in this devotional is dedicated to a book in the Bible, sixty-six days in all. Reading scripture should be fun. The author finds humor in many aspects of his own life and shares parallels in order to illustrate the loving nature of God's message to all of us.

This book shows how imaginative literature brings women's medical experiences back to lived moments in living bodies, where readers can, perhaps, better understand what it feels like to be someone else. The authors provide four sections that discuss birth, abortion, miscarriage, and fertility; breast cancer; middle age, menopause, and hysterectomy; and aging. While the focus is on twentieth-century North American women, a particular emphasis is placed on the diversity of women's experiences within that time and culture.

In her 1927 autobiography Carrie Jacobs-Bond wrote: "The only thing that seems to me at all remarkable about my life is that I was nearly thirty-two years old before I even thought of having a career." After years of research I have concluded, on the contrary, that everything about her life was remarkable. A divorcee, then a widow, she was nearly forty years old before her music lifted her out of poverty. She went on to make a fortune as her own publisher, becoming an international celebrity, world traveler, friend of the rich and famous, sometime vaudeville star, and a charitable woman who gave away most of her money before she died. The woman's life needs to be revisited. Her own book was long on anecdotes and platitudes but short on times and places, and on the secrets of her heart. I have filled in some of the blank pages in her life's story by creating this new autobiography. Names and places and dates within reach of my research are faithfully employed. The rest is an affectionate and studied re-telling of her life, knit together by a man who never met Carrie Jacobs-Bond but has been under her spell ever since he sang "I Love You Truly" in 7th grade Boys' Glee Club. MAX MORATH EDITOR: USE THIS QUOTE BOTTOM BACK PAGE: Morath brings to everything he touches a keen intelligence and encyclopedic knowledge of every aspect, musical and otherwise, of late 19th and early 20th century Americana. 2021 Special Edition of the American Educational History Journal (The official journal of the Organization of Educational Historians) The American Educational History Journal is a peer-reviewed, national research journal devoted to the examination of educational topics using perspectives from a variety of disciplines. For more information about the Organization of Educational Historians (OEH) and its annual conference, visit the OEH web site at the web address: www.edhistorians.org. This Special Edition of the American Educational History Journal entitled, Snapshots of Educational History: Portraits of the 21st Century Pandemic, is the first special issue in the history of AEHJ. The word, “unprecedented” has literally been used thousands of times during 2020 by news outlets, in our work environments, and in our daily lives. And indeed, the global pandemic has killed over 600,000 in the United States alone at the time of this writing. The public health crisis shut down everything as we knew it. Captives of sheltering-in-place, scores of incidents displaying horrific police brutality against people of color streamed live on airwaves north, south, east, and west, begetting civil unrest across the country. These are circumstances unlike any we have experienced in our lifetimes. As historians, it is critical that we document this time of crisis so that generations to come can bear witness to this time of turmoil and tragedy. With these ideas in mind, the American Educational History Journal sought to hear from historians and other scholars about this unique and devastating time in our country’s history. The Journal honors the traditions of oral history and narrative storytelling as a means to gather the voices of those whose lives have been touched by the COVID-19 crisis, literally everyone around the globe. This special issue deviates a bit from traditional AEHJ requirements in that we specifically invited narratives, not be full-blown historical research studies. The point of this special issue is for authors themselves to serve as the archival material that will benefit future scholars interested in understanding what it meant to live through this health catastrophe while doing the work of educators. We believe we owe it to the historians of the future to share our voices in real time.
