This is a funny little story told in rhyme about a boy who says there is a skunk in his trunk and that the skunk also did some pretty bad things around the house. See if you believe the boy, and ask yourself what happened. Listen to the rhyming words and practice your reading as you look at the words and guess what comes next. Written and illustrated by Penny D. Weigand, aka Penelope Dyan, an award winning author, attorney and former teacher, who believes all learning should be fun, this book does just that! It makes learning fun. So laugh at the silliness and remember while this book is funny, you should always tell the truth. Also remember that sometimes when you make up stories it is very obvious that you are NOT telling the truth---unless of course you believe what this boy had to say about what went on in his house. And that, my dear reader, is where the story and the mystery behind it begins, even if it is an extremely silly story. In any event, it is always good to be careful when you open a trunk, because you never REALLY know what you MIGHT find inside of it. Or maybe (just perhaps) you do

What do you get when Andy Griffith meets Night at the Museum? A comedic novel called Skunks, Trunks, and Pedro. Chris Banks, a newly appointed sheriff, is up for a rude awakening as Wallace and Willie Gumble, two backwoods twins with more money than sense, strive to break every stupid law on the books, including whaling…in Oklahoma. All Chris wants to do is propose to Debbie Morgan and settle into small-town bliss. But with a town mayor who dresses up like a skunk, a stuffed buffalo named Pedro making appearances, and a bipolar midget chasing a circus-trained elephant named Trunks, it’s going to take a miracle to get the words, “Will you marry me?” out. There’s also Richard Stone, a close friend who is dying from cancer. Chris is his only option to care for his sixteen-year-old daughter, Shelly. Chris can’t seem to handle the wildlife and isn’t so sure he’s going to fare much better with a teenager, but when life hands you livestock, you just have to join the herd. For Chris, that just might mean a life not only with Debbie but also Shelly.

This story takes place on a cattle ranch/farm in southern North Dakota. Main characters are Dusty, Jason, Alora, Jake, and Bella the family dachshund. These family members are taking care of the ranch for Grams and Gramps, whom are on a vacation. Alora is Dusty's daughter, Jake is Jason's son and Bella is Jason and Jake's dachshund who also has an important role in the story. Alora and Jake love to be at the ranch to play with all the animals, and to go on exploring adventures. There are so many different things to do, like play with the kittens, chickens or the horses. In Jake and Alora's adventure they find not only kittens, chickens and horses, but baby kittens that turn out to be baby skunks! It is Bella that finds the baby skunks in an old trunk in back of the old barn. That's when the fun really starts! There's lots of excitement when the kids show their dads the baby kittens (skunks). A very protective mamma skunk shows up and gives them a dose of her perfumed spray! Once Dusty and Jason get cleaned up they work on a plan to safely move the whole skunk family to a nice quiet refuge. All ends well when the skunk family is taken to a nice wooded area with plenty of other wildlife. Dusty, Jason, Alora and Jake are happy that they could be a part of rescuing the skunks in the trunk to a more suitable environment!
