Excerpt from Sir John Cope and the Rebellion of 1745 In consequence of an article in 'Blackwood's Magazine' of July 1894, entitled "Side-lights on the Battles of Preston and Falkirk," in which a description was given of the battle of Prestonpans and of the part which Sir John Cope played therein, my brother, the late General Sir Robert Cadell, resolved to compile a more detailed and strictly accurate account of the battle and of the circumstances which led to it. This was a task for which he was peculiarly qualified, his home being in the immediate vicinity of the battlefield, and he being familiar from boyhood with the local topography and traditions, and also with the history of the times, to say nothing of his large military experience gained in the Crimea and in India. The information which he collected could not be compressed into a magazine article, and the work which he had undertaken assumed larger proportions than he had anticipated.
