Raised around the globe by a high-ranking American spymaster, Larry Kolb learned to think, look, and listen like a spy. Overworld—his father's term for the powers-that-be—is Larry Kolb's story of his own lifelong interaction with those powers. Overworld casts in human terms what it actually means and feels like to be a spy. From the practical to the emotional, it reveals how the world of espionage and covert statecraft actually works, and exposes the dark heart of a life built on betrayals.

Ancient cultures were faced with two immense problems. Why is there something rather than nothing and why is the universe ordered rather than chaotic? To answer these questions, they invented cosmologies, which were also the basis of their religious beliefs. A person's cosmological and religious beliefs are always interdependent. The ordered universe of the ancients was divided into four: 1) the World (that we inhabit), 2) the Overworld (the sky and heavens that the gods inhabit), 3) the Underworld (that the dead inhabit), and 4) Dreamworld (the mysterious zone between sleep and death that connects the living, dead and the gods). This is the incredible story of these four worlds and how they have influenced the development of all human thought, right up to the present day.

But what they’ve found turns out to be much more valuable. William is one of Minecraft’s most renowned explorers. He’s a legend in the world of Minecraft, but, under suspicious circumstances, he’s gone missing. The book they’ve discovered is a journal—a lost journal that once belonged to William the Explorer. Ignoring the ominous DO NOT OPEN THIS BOOK! warning scribbled across the journal, the treasure hunters delve into the book’s pages. Filled with the knowledge William has gathered during his adventures, the journal offers invaluable information for the treasure hunters. The promise of hidden strongholds filled with treasure is too good to resist, and the trio begins an epic journey in search of rare goods and possibly even the long-lost explorer himself. Stevie has been having repeated nightmares about the mysterious figure known as “Herobrine.” Some say Herobrine is an old ghost story. Some say he’s a virus. But no one believes he is real…except maybe Stevie, whose nightmares are telling him that Herobrine is going to take over the Overworld. His cousin Alex has come to visit, and during one of her explorations, she finds a music disc that predicts the destruction of the Overworld! Are Stevie’s nightmares and the music disc connected? Stevie and Alex hook up with Stevie’s best friend Maison, and the three quickly begin looking for answers. While they look, Herobrine is drawing ever closer. Someone is stealing the villagers’ most precious belongings, including Stevie’s cat, Ossie. People are angry and turning against one another. This book introduces a new and still emerging theoretical framework for understanding language shift and uses this approach to explore a range of minority language communities in the United States. To date, approaches to language shift have typically relied on explaining the process through descriptive sociolinguistic models, i.e., how the community first becomes bilingual in both the majority and minority languages and then eventually shifts entirely to the majority language. The contributions in this volume instead attribute shift to a change from local control of tightly interconnected 'horizontal' institutions within a community to more external or 'vertical' control of those increasingly autonomous institutions outside the community; in short, language shift is driven by specific changes in community structure. In addition, unlike previous approaches to language shift, the one proposed here is generalizable. Following an introduction to the theory, the main five chapters in the book offer case studies of individual language communities, in different contexts and different periods. The final three chapters of the book take a broader perspective, looking beyond the United States: two leading specialists in the field provide critical commentaries on the theoretical approach and offer refinements to a theory of language shift, before a concluding chapter draws together the findings of the case studies and reflections on the commentaries. The volume will appeal to researchers and students in the fields of language revitalization, community studies, sociolinguistics, and social history.

The essays included in Social Organization and Peasant Societies were written in honor of the man who taught their authors. Each entry is about different problems within the general field of "social organization."They were composed in many styles; and deal ethnographically with a heterogeneous collection of peoples and countries. Together they illustrate an important aspect of Firth's influence as a teacher: the range of his interests and his success in promoting social anthropological research on the broadest front. The breadth and the variety in the work of his students reflect Firth's own catholicity. From economics he reached into every corner of the field covered by social anthropology, and many of his interests can be traced in these essays on themes in kinship and marriage (by Baric, Benedict, Kaberry, and Leach) and on religious subjects (by Freedman, Morris, and Stanner). Still more detail the study of modern social change (by Little and Mayer). There is even one is on art (by Forge). Three are devoted to subjects in economic anthropology (by Belshaw, Swift, and Ward). On all of these varied and complex topics Raymond Firth has written extensively and taught untiringly. Many of the contributors to his festschrift are themselves leading anthropologists.Raymond Firth's importance in the history of social anthropology is undisputed. He came into the profession when it was small and unformed, when it existed only in the tiny groups of people around Malinowski and Radcliffe-Brown. He urged it on, by intellectual leadership, by careful organization, and by devoted service. He was one of a small band of scholars; he created a large school. He inherited an esoteric seminar from Malinowski; he turned it into a great class where, over the years, hundreds of students marveled at his skill and learned their craft as analysts and field workers. His protege listened to his formulation of problems, his critique of methods, and his courteous but un
