'Sevasadan' is one of the most representative novels of Munshi Premchand. Soon after it was published, the novel kicked up national debates on such pertinent social issues as prostitution and the place of women in the Indian society. Social taboos dominated the scenario as much as reformers' zeal to tight the rot in the social value system. The story oscillates round a glamour-struck young girl's life. who was brought up with utmost love and care but whose father had to suffer ignominy at the hands of his adversaries for taking a once-in-lifetime bribe and being jailed for that. Her prospective engagement was broken because her mother, now made a destitute with her daughters, failed to meet the demand of dowry from the bridegroom's family. Hapless and stranded, she. along with her mother and sibling sister, was under care of her maternal-uncle. gets married to a middle-aged pauper and pushed to life-long poverty. She failed to get what she had been dreaming for since her childhood. She fought continual battles between aspiration for a respected prosperous lifestyle, and the existing value system which forced her to live with poverty. By the turns of events she ends up into a life of a tawaif, hatefully tries to come out of the nuisance but the irony of fate makes her the centre-point of all debates on how prostitutes could be rescued and rehabilitated. 'Sevasadan' exposes the time Premchand lived in. It also reflects how seriously the author had waged a battle, which is being fought in the Indian society even today.

His real name was Dhanpat Rai but he is better known by his pen name Munshi Premchand. He has been read and studied both in India and abroad as one of the greatest writers of the century. Premchand's literary career started as a freelancer in Urdu. In his initial short stories he has depicted the patriotic upsurge that was sweeping the country in the first decade of the 19th century. In 1914, Premchand started writing in Hindi. Premchand was the first Hindi author to introduce realism in his writings. He pioneered the new art form of fiction with a social purpose. He wrote of the life around him and made his readers aware of the problems of the urban middle-class and the country's villages. Besides being a great novelist, Premchand was also a social reformer and thinker. Pratigya is the story about a young idealist who takes on himself the task of social upliftment and progress. It gives a vivid description of the society during that era and the obstructions that were faced by the few who believed in a new and better country by the removal of social evils prevalent during those times.

Anagol traces the ways in which Indian women engaged with the power structures-both colonialist and patriarchical-which sought to define them. Through her analysis of Indian male reactions to movements of assertion by women, Anagol shows that the development of feminist consciousness in India from the late nineteenth century to the coming of Gandhi was not one of uninterrupted unilinear progression. The book illustrates the ways in which such movements were based upon a consciousness of the inequalities in gender relations and highlights the determination of an emerging female intelligentsia to remedy it.
