Excerpt from Sermons on the Following Subjects, Vol. 2 Since the nature of those things which are most generally admired and pursued by the children of men is such, that they may prove hurtful as well as beneficial: and are not so frequently the means of contentment and happiness, as the contrary; who, that considers this, will pretend to say what is good for man, for himself, or for any other man in this life, all the days of his vain life, which he spendeth as a shadow? We may here observe several things I. The account which the Wiseman gives us of the present life. It is a vain life, and spent as a shadow. II. An inquiry natural enough for all to make, and, rightly managed, very necessary and useful, (viz.) What is good for man in this life? III. The ignorance of man in this important point. Who knoweth? that is, no one knoweth what is good for man in this life. I. Let us for a while consider, and revolve in our minds the account which the Wiseman gives us of the present life. It is a vain life and spent as a shadow. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Discourses on Various Subjects, Vol. 2 of 3 My Lord, I confess the publication of these sermons can so little serve the ends of my reputation, that I am therefore pleased the rather to do it, because I cannot at all be tempted, in so doing, to minister to any thing of vanity. Sermons may please when they first strike the ear, and yet appear flat and ignorant when they are offered to the eye, and to an understanding that can consider at leisure. I remember that a young gentleman of Athens, being to answer for his life, hired an orator to make his defence, and it pleased him well at his first reading, but when the young man by often reading it, that he might recite it publickly by heart, began to grow weary and displeased with it, the orator bade him consider that the judges and the people were to hear it but once, and then it was likely, they, at that first instant, might be as well pleased as he. Excerpt from Discourses on Several Subjects, Vol. 2 But to form a true estimate of Abraham's faith and sub mission, it is necessary to take one circumstance more into the account - the tender scene which passed between the father and son, as they walked together to the place of sacrifice. Isaac, loaded with the wood, seeing the knife and fire in his father's hands, said, Behold, my father, the fire and the wood; but where is the lamb for a burnt-o 'ering P God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt-offering, replied the heart-rent father. So much has Moses recorded - The scene he has not described. Feel it every parent must; but what imagination can do justice to the emotions of nature, the agonies of piety, the rendings of affection, which tore the heart of Abra ham whtle he informed his son, that he himsel was the lamb which God had provided for a burnt-offering? We may figure the scene to ourselves, but it cannot be de scribed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
