DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Semi-Centennial of Girard College: Biographical Sketch of Stephen Girard, His Will, and Other Papers Relating to the College and Its Development and Government; Account of the Exercises on the Occasion of the Celebration of the Opening of the College, January 3, 1898 Time tries all the thoughts and inventions of man. In contemplating the progress of some great idea, time takes the place of perspective and plays the same part that distance does when we would comprehend the beauty and grandeur of a cathedral. Then we stand by the side of the architect, and see the building as he saw it in the secret chambers of his mind. So the Semi-Centennial of Girard College afforded us similar conditions in the contemplation of the ideas of Stephen Girard. Different from other educational centres, his College is not merely a name, but it represents the real plan and belief of the Founder. Nowhere is there such an exhibition of one man's thought and work. The ideas of the Founder have been carried out by those administering them with an eye single to his wishes, and the best results have flowed from a rigid construction of his words. That these results are potent fifty years after his death posterity may partly gather from this volume. Posterity will not, however, be able to comprehend the environments of the day celebrated, the great gathering of distinguished citizens, of graduates who had gone forth equipped for the battle of life, of pupils who are being trained for useful lives; the stately buildings and decorations, the brilliant illumination, and, finally, the air of festivity which no description can reproduce.
