This book is designed to provide an interesting way for children to learn the alphabet, and at the same time introduce them to some of the North American birds that are an important part of their natural heritage. Grandpa and his grandson, Hayes, meet for a hike in Grandpa's big backyard. Hayes askes if they can play the alphabet bird game while they walk, and Grandpa agrees. In this game, Hayes asks three questions about each bird. First, he asks Grandpa to name a bird that starts with a letter of the alphabet. Grandpa names the bird, and a large portrait of that bird is presented, along with a pronunciation guide for it, and a comment by the bird that highlights some aspect of its appearance or natural history. Second, he asks Grandpa where they can see the bird, and they locate a smaller image of it in the picture of Grandpa's big backyard found on the adjacent page. Third, Hayes asks what that bird eats. After Grandpa answers, Hayes makes a comment about its food compared to his food. At the end of the hike, Hayes notes how the alphabet birds fill the big backyard, and he hopes there will be enough flies and fish there for them to eat. Finally, while they relax on a bench, Grandpa askes Hayes if he can match each alphabet bird's name with its image in the big backyard.
