Education communities play a crucial role in providing opportunities for individuals to learn and grow. Schools and education settings are often the heart of a community, a place in which members develop a sense of being and belonging. This review explores the ways in which education communities operate as welcoming and enriching places that connect, share and learn with, not only students, families and educators but also their wider community. One model of school-community partnership currently existing in Australia is schools that operate as community hubs, providing disadvantaged students and their parents with complementary supports. Work at the City of Hume in Victoria has identified the need for a resource or toolkit to support schools interested in establishing themselves as community hubs. To help inform the development of such a resource, this literature review investigates the evidence and best practice. Topics include: models of school-community partnerships more broadly; benefits and evidence on effectiveness; the primary schools as community hubs model; existing models and evidence on effectiveness; and critical areas of consideration. Examples from the City of Hume are included.
