Good afternoon, and I welcome you. The Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health, and Human Serv ices, and Education will come to order. This subcommittee funds a number of programs that are impor tant to Iowa and other rural States, including the rural health transition grants for small hospitals, the National Health Service Corps, the rural health outreach grants, community and migrant health centers, funds for breast and cervical cancer screening, and of course all of the funds dedicated to research. We are here this afternoon to learn some more about rural health care and to look at some of the important issues associated with health care reform in a rural State. People are talking a lot about health care reform now. It is a top priority of the Clinton administration. And as you know, Mrs. Clin ton is in charge of a task force that will come up with a health care reform plan hopefully by the end of May.
