DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Rudimentary Treatise on Marine Engines and Steam Vessels: Together With Practical Remarks on the Screw and Propelling Power, as Used in the Royal and Merchant Navy In adding a treatise on the Management of Marine Engines to Mr. Weale's Series of Rudimentary Works, the Author trusts that it may prove a useful auxiliary to the various classes of practical men interested in the performance of our Steam Marine, whether in the Royal Navy or Merchant Service. Desirous of being understood alike by the non-professional man of business, who from his desk in the city controls the operations of a fleet of steam ships, as by the humblest assistant in the duties of the engine-room, he has endeavoured to express himself in as concise and matter-of-fact a manner as possible, avoiding as far as may be the use of technical language and mathematical demonstration, without attempting, at the same time, to render the text intelligible to the wholly uninitiated, by perplexing it with notes and explanations which ought to suggest themselves to every one acquainted with the rudiments of mechanical science. Some very essential Tables of the details of Engines and Vessels are added in the Appendix; and such technical terms as do necessarily occur will be found explained in the Glossary at the end, and several corrections made in this second Edition.
