Bearing Capacity of Roads, Railways and Airfields includes the contributions to the 10th International Conference on the Bearing Capacity of Roads, Railways and Airfields (BCRRA 2017, 28-30 June 2017, Athens, Greece). The papers cover aspects related to materials, laboratory testing, design, construction, maintenance and management systems of transport infrastructure, and focus on roads, railways and airfields. Additional aspects that concern new materials and characterization, alternative rehabilitation techniques, technological advances as well as pavement and railway track substructure sustainability are included. The contributions discuss new concepts and innovative solutions, and are concentrated but not limited on the following topics: · Unbound aggregate materials and soil properties · Bound materials characteritics, mechanical properties and testing · Effect of traffic loading · In-situ measurements techniques and monitoring · Structural evaluation · Pavement serviceability condition · Rehabilitation and maintenance issues · Geophysical assessment · Stabilization and reinforcement · Performance modeling · Environmental challenges · Life cycle assessment and sustainability Bearing Capacity of Roads, Railways and Airfields is essential reading for academics and professionals involved or interested in transport infrastructure systems, in particular roads, railways and airfields.

The work provides novel methods to process inertial sensor and acoustic sensor data for road condition estimation and monitoring with application in vehicles, which serve as sensor platforms. Furthermore, methods are introduced to combine the results from various vehicles for a more reliable estimation.

This synthesis report will be of interest to pavement design, construction, management, and research engineers, highway safety officials, and others concerned with pavement friction characteristics. It describes the current state of the practice and discusses the methods used for evaluating wet pavement friction characteristics of new and restored pavements. This synthesis reviews models used for measuring and evaluating friction and texture, causes for friction changes over time, and aggregate and mix design to provide adequate friction. Also presented are construction and surface restoration practices for providing good pavement surface characteristics. In addition, considerations of noise and ride quality are discussed when compromise may be required.

This investigation was undertaken to determine the influence of airfield pavement surface roughness upon aircraft operations and to develop more realistic airfield pavement surface smoothness criteria for the construction of new airfield pavements based upon aircraft and aircraft crew operational requirements. Based upon a literature review of previous efforts in the area of pavement roughness, the human response criteria to whole body vibration were selected as the criteria for assessing the severity of aircraft response resulting from ground operations. Field tests were conducted using instrumented aircraft to measure the acceleration response of the aircraft at three locations within the fuselage during a series of ground operations. The profiles of the test site runways were also measured. The results of these tests provided a direct measure of the influence of a known runway surface on the response of the aircraft system and information for the verification of the computer code used during the subsequent analytical phase of the investigation. Aircraft response data were measured for both the B-52 and the boeing 727 aircraft.
