"The veterinary profession is experiencing a mental health crisis that critically threatens individual resilience and has manifested significantly among the military medical community. US Army veterinary personnel represent a particularly high-risk population due to their unique circumstances and professional responsibilities. The provision of veterinary services affords unique military public health and specialty skill sets essential to readiness and combat effectiveness. Resilience is a key concept that fundamentally contributes to the wellness of veterinary care providers within the military. Current resilience models and mental health support frameworks focus on identifying factors that affect resilience for health care providers but fail to capture and explain the complex challenge of resilience in US Army veterinarians. Existing solutions have proven insufficient to mitigate the crisis. Continuing US Army Medical Department (AMEDD) efforts must consider the uniquity of professional stressors focusing on individual resilience with organizational support, urgently preserving the military veterinary mission. Innovative solutions are necessary that incorporate flexibility for ongoing shifts in the internal and external environment navigated by military veterinary professionals. Proposed solutions must address the full spectrum of threats encountered by US Army veterinarians over their professional careers. The purpose of this professional studies paper is to catalog and explain imminent threats to resilience in the US Army veterinary population and offer some practical solutions designed to ameliorate these complex hazards and ultimately strengthen resilience in and across this critical service group."--Abstract.

This book is the first dedicated solely to military veterinary medicine. Its chapters outline the history and the diverse duties that make the practice of military veterinary medicine significantly different from the practice of civilian veterinary medicine, yet an integral part of Army medicine. Besides offering readers a comprehensive overview of past veterinary support to the US military, this book also covers the Veterinary Corps’ more modern contributions to US missions, including: support of special operations forces’ tactical canine programs and combat casualty care; food protection and defense; military working dog, horse, mule, and marine mammal programs; global zoonotic disease surveillance and military research and development.

Military personnel and their families face innumerable challenges. Deployed soldiers are exposed to a wide range of stressors, from the continuous, low-level experience of living in a strange and austere environment for a lengthy period of time, to acute, traumatic events that occur during combat. All of these experiences can lead to long-term psychological problems like posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, substance abuse, and even suicide. Back home, spouses of deployed soldiers face an increased likelihood of depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders, while their children may exhibit behavioral issues and negative outcomes in school. In the face of these persistent problems, researchers have consistently identified resilience, a term derived from the psychological and psychiatric literature, as perhaps the single most important factor predicting successful outcomes for military personnel and their families. In this book, Sinclair and Britt and a distinguished group of researchers investigate the concept of resilience, its essential role in normal psychological development, and its relevance within various occupational contexts unique to the military. They also evaluate existing programs for developing and maintaining resilience that have been implemented in various branches of the U.S. Armed Forces. Book jacket.

As U.S. service members deploy for extended periods on a repeated basis, their ability to cope with the stress of deployment may be challenged. Many programs are available to encourage and support psychological resilience among service members and families. However, little is known about these programs' effectiveness. This report reviews resilience literature and programs to identify evidence-informed factors for promoting resilience.

A Call to Life aims to help veterinary caregivers increase self-efficacy, decrease unnecessary suffering, and increase sustainability in their mission to support animal health around the world. The veterinary profession is powered by dedicated, bright, and selfless individuals. Unfortunately, the long-standing and dysfunctional culture in classrooms and practices around the world expects veterinary caregivers to be ready to sacrifice everything – their time, their health, their personal lives – in the name of being deemed qualified and ‘worthy.’ Integrating real-life stories from a range of veterinary caregivers with evidence-based theory, practical activities, discussion and reflection points, and insights drawn from the author’s own experiences, the book empowers veterinarians by showing that they have the ability and the control to choose a healthier way forward for themselves and for their profession. It describes how to: Normalize the conversation around mental and emotional health challenges in caregiving environments Discuss and collaboratively create systemic solutions that promote healthier ‘ecosystems’ for vets to work within Develop the skills of reframing, mindfulness, and self-care strategy implementation supporting holistic veterinary well-being Collectively choose to shift the framework of professional conversations towards psychological safety, optimism, and purpose-driven experiences. Creating Wellbeing and Building Resilience in the Veterinary Profession: A Call to Life uniquely combines shared experiences (personal stories) with academic research into the contributing factors of compassion fatigue and how to counter these. Normalizing the conversation in the profession, it provides a wide array of possible solutions to build resilience and to shape a culture of collaboration and support where caregivers can flourish.

Asymmetric threats, such as man-made and natural disasters, agroterrorism, disease pandemics, attacks on the food supply and bioterrorism constitute some of the most serious challenges to U.S. national security in the 21st century. The U.S. Army Veterinary Corps (VC) serves a critical role in protecting military personnel and working animal health as the Department of Defense Executive Agent for Veterinary Services. However, better alignment to the U.S. national security vision through employment of unique and untapped capabilities transforms the VC into a more potent means to counter these asymmetric threats. The VC accomplishes this by aligning its capabilities in a more formal way with other government agencies charged with countering these threats, expanding its role in stability operations support, and regionally aligning its deployable units. Furthermore, building its capacity through training and professional education while enhancing diplomacy through its leadership development ensure a valuable, relevant and reliable VC prepared to counter these 21st century asymmetric threats.
