Excerpt from Report of the Fruit Growers' Association of the Province of Ontario, for the Year 1880 A vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Smith for his paper, and some discussion took place thereon. Messrs. Saunders, Roy, Switzer, Arnold, Smith, Bell, Burnet, Brooks and others took part in the discussion, which soon swayed from raspberries to grafting ap'ples, pears, etc. About half-past eleven o'clock Mr. Dempsey called attention to the fact that the Association was getting away from their text, and made a few interesting remarks on raspberries. He endorsed what Mr. Smith had written about certain varieties. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Report of the Fruit Growers' Association of the Province of Ontario for the Year 1878 Let our future Executive Committee take another note for another paragraph in their incipient bill to form the basis of future legislation. It might justly be noted here that premature and diseased fruit from Ohio, and other States, anticipates our Canadian markets. These introductions lower the price of our Cana dian horticultural products. Our fruit-growers are thus deprived of the benefit accruing from being first in the market. Buyers will not give, a fortnight after the season has begun, the prices obtained easily at the opening. Our horticulturists are thus placed in the position, of being unable, in some instances, to meet their rents when due, in other, not able to meet their liabilities, and general depression is the consequence. You are well aware, gentlemen, that this is no imaginary picture. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Report of the Fruit Growers' Association of the Province of Ontario, for the Year 1874 Such is a brief summary of the year's productiveness as far as we have from observation been able to gather. You might perhaps wish me to stop here, but something more seems absolutely necessary in the President's Annual Address: After rummaging about in many directions, and bothering friends for some text, or subject matter of address, to be at one and the same time both interesting and useful, I em about to draw a few useful lessons or hints from the perambulatory habits of the Association itself. Excerpt from Report of the Fruit Growers' Association of Ontario, for the Year 1877: To Which Is Appended the Annual Report of the Entomological Society of the Province of Ontario, for the Year 1877 No arrangements have been made for the distribution of any trees or plants beyond the spring of 1879, hence upon our successors will devolve the burden of selecting some promising fruits for dissemination in future years, in time to have them propagated in sufficient quantity for that purpose. Of late years the Directors have recognized the principle of giving prefer ence to fruits of Canadian origin, where their qualities were such as gave promise of adapta tion to our climate, and of their becoming a valuable addition to our list of fruits. Excerpt from Thirty-Eighth Annual Report of the Fruit Growers' Association of Ontario, 1906 Your Executive have met formally during the past 12 months on four occasions. Early in the new year, it was seen that the clauses relating to affiliated associations, as adopted at the last annual meeting, would not be workable under the conditions existing at the latter time. In November, when the changes were made, the numerous horticultural societies in the Province were nominally eligible for affiliation, and as these societies were receiving government assistance, it was thought that the affiliation fee should be fixed as high as 750. Per member. The day following the close of the fruit convention, representatives of the horticultural societies met and formally organized the Association of Horticultural Societies of Ou tario. This action relieved the Fruit Growers' Association of any further necessity of looking after the interests of these societies, and at the same time changed entirely the outlook for membership during the coming year. \one of the local Fruit Growers' Associations were receiving Government assistance and were unable to pay the high fee of 75 cents per member. Excerpt from Report of the Fruit Growers' Association of the Province of Ontario, for the Year 1875: To Which Is Appended the Report of the Entomological Society, for the Year 1875 Although the past winter was one of unusual severity, yet on the whole the fruit crop has been abundant. In those sections of our Province where the peach can be grown successfully, there was a large yield. Some varieties of fruit, including the grape, scarcely came up to their usual excellence, owing to the unusual coolness of the summer. We have had another remarkable illustration of the fact that, even in the high latitude of the Ottawa Valley, such is the intensity of the heat of their short summers, that many varieties of the grape have ripened better there than in more favoured southern localities.
