Excerpt from Memoirs of a Sportsman Any one who has had occasion to pass from the Bolkhoff district to the Zhizdrin district, has, in all probability, been struck by the sharp difference between the races of people in the Governments of Orel and Kaluga. The Orel peasant is small of stature, round-shouldered, surly, gazes askance from beneath his brows, lives in miserable huts of ash lumber, discharges husbandry-service for the lord of the manor, does not occupy himself with trading, eats bad food, and wears plaited slippers of linden bark; the Kaluga peasant, who pays the lord of the manor a quit-rent in lieu of personal husbandry-service, is tall of stature, his gaze is bold and merry, he is clean and white of face, he deals in butter and tar, and wears boots on festival days. An Orel village (we are speaking of the eastern part of the Orel Government) is generally situated in the midst of tilled fields, near a ravine somehow converted into a filthy pond. Excerpt from My Life as Soldier and Sportsman When a mere layman writes a book it is customary for him to inscribe a preface or, as Izaak Walton would say, an epistle to the readers. My original idea was to write and have printed a few personal reminiscences of the days and weeks I have spent in various sports, for the young folks who may come after me; in fact, I contemplated writing a sort of boys' book. How ever, it came to pass that I met, and discussed the subject with, Mr Arthur F. Meyrick who, like myself, is getting on in years. He is a most enthusiastic student of racing and other sports, and in addition to suggesting that I should write a larger volume, on more general subjects, he volunteered to contribute to my book by supplying details of the Grand National from Lottery to Troytown. Gradually, as the copy grew, so did the number of new ideas. Thus it came about that causeries on other sports suggested themselves to me. When a young man, Mr Meyrick followed in the footsteps of his father in the journalistic world. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Reminiscences of an Old Sportsman, Vol. 1 of 2 On those subjects which I cannot altogether treat from experience, such as falconry, hawking, and deer stalking, I have consulted several old works, more especially Blome, who wrote in the latter end of the seventeenth century, and also standard modern works. I am likewise indebted for much useful information and anecdote to some of my sporting friends, amongst whom I may class General Shaw Kennedy, who practised hawking in Ayrshire, many years ago, when a considerable part of that county was unen closed. Excerpt from How I Became a Sportsman: Being Early Reminiscences of a Veteran Sportsman IN venturing to place before the public this little work, the author does not for one moment attempt to claim for it anything more than an endeavour to give a hint to the embryo, or perhaps to amuse the more mature or declining, sportsman. As the title expresses, these reminis cences are the author's early experiences only, and must not therefore be expected to throw very much daylight on the subjects treated of. Nor must the reader expect any learned advice or dissertations on sport in general; still at times a point or two will crop up which the author considers to be crucial ones in making a good, bad, or indifferent sportsman, particularly in What relates to the gun. Excerpt from The Life of a Sportsman MY design and object in writing this work was not merely to depict the life of a sportsman, in the general - perhaps, with some persons, unfavourable - acceptation of that term, but, taking higher ground, to portray the character of an English gentleman attached to the sports and pastimes of his country; and, likewise, to give a sketch of a country gentleman's family, in as close imitation as pos sible of those of the best description, with which it has been my good fortune to become acquainted. In fact, in many instances, the imitation, or resemblance, is so close, as not to be doubtful to many as to who are the original parties; and they themselves cannot be displeased with my selection, when they are intended to be displayed as examplars worthy of being followed by others. Excerpt from Annals of a Sportsman The thought that inspired this composition is worthy of praise. The Reez't: d'un C/zasseur are destined chie y to de pict to us the interesting population which, to the shame of our century, is in Russia still groaning under the odious yoke of serfdom. Little country lordlings indeed figure in the stories; but they are placed in the background, and all interest is centred on the men who live under them. Every one will doubtless applaud the courage of the writer, who, under the suspicious regime then in all its vigor in Russia, did not fear to consecrate his pen to such an enter prise. Before him no one had dared to attempt it; the world in the midst of which he introduces us was a region unknown to Russian literature. Excerpt from Sport and Sportsmen: A Book of Recollections I may here mention that, through the kindness of 1 friend well known to many of the best families in Perthshire, I was the bearer of no fewer than twelve letters of introduction. Armed with these missives, I felt perfectly 81, mon aise, as I desired my servant to go and secure two outside seats for Perth, determining to make use of one of my introductory letters at the residence of a gentleman who resided four or five miles distant from that town.
