Excerpt from Reminiscences About Abraham Lincoln In the dawn of the 20th century, looking backward through the vista of time, I recall my first knowledge of Lincoln. Early in the forties, my father, then a resident of the state of Indiana, had correspondence with him pertaining to business of the anti - slavery cause, in which my father was a zealous worker; and previous to this Lincoln had declare-d his opposition to slavery and its extension, basing his opinion on facts experienced in the South where he had been reared. Thus I came to know something of his individual character and sterling qualities of mind and heart prior to meeting him. Excerpt from Reminiscences of Abraham Lincoln by Distinguished Men of His Time T was mainly with the view of accumulating a mass of trustworthy evidence concerning the personal traits and private utterances of Abraham Lincoln that I conceived the plan and approached the task of uniting in one or more volumes the opinions of the most distinguished characters, still surviving, of the great war which produced them. The result has been gratifying beyond expectation, furnishing - I think it is not too much to say - a remarkable book about a remarkable man. Excerpt from Reminiscences of Abraham Lincoln, Vol. 2: By Distinguished Men of His Time Upon the ground, whittling sticks, and heard me, throughout, with marked attention. Hurrying on to my appointments, I saw him then no more. I never shall forget his long, ungainly person, and plain, but even then sad and thoughtful features. He was but little known to the world, but his being the husband of my old friend of earlier days caused me to look with interest upon him. I flatter myself that I sowed good seed in good ground, which, in the providence of God, produced in time good fruit. Joshua and James Speed, now famous for their associations with Lincoln, Kentuckians and natives of Jefferson County, Kentucky, were my schoolmates, and relatives of John Speed Smith, who married my eldest sister Eliza. A few years ago Joshua was in vited to deliver a lecture at Berea College, inomy county, upon Lincoln. This college, of which I and John G. Fee were the founders, is about fourteen miles from Richmond by the old buggy road. I heard Speed's lecture with great interest, and taking him in my carriage, drove him to my sister Smith's residence, about twelve miles north-east from Berea. On the route we naturally talked much of Lincoln, of which conversation I will give some account. Joshua Speed, the son of a wealthy farmer, quit Kentucky and set up a miscellaneous store in the capital of Illinois, then a'mere backwoods village. One day an awkward green stranger of great stature. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Footprints of Abraham Lincoln: Presenting Many Interesting Facts, Reminiscences and Illustrations Never Before Published Like many others, I have always taken great interest in the life and work of Abraham Lincoln. There are some special reasons for this, upon my part, aside from my interest in the lives of great men, and the magnetic charm which surrounds the name and fame of the most eminent American and emancipator of a race. The name, Abraham Lincoln, is connected with my family history, and with one of my first achievements with pen and ink. Because of an affliction in early life, I was, for two or three years, unable to attend the public schools. At home I learned to make figures and letters with slate and pencil, as other writing material was not so common then as now. The first line I ever wrote with pen and ink was at home, at the age of ten, under a Copy on foolscap paper, written by my sainted mother, Abraham Lincoln, President, 1861. After the birth of John the Baptist, there was consider able controversy among the kinsfolk as to what name he should bear. The father, old Zacharias, was appealed to.
