Excerpt from Religion and the School The problem of religion in public education, although doubtless of first rate importance, is frequently felt to be one of considerable difficulty. While it seems clear, on the one hand, that religious ideas and institutions have been of too great significance in the cul tural history of the race for the school wholly to absolve itself of the duty of introducing the child to this part of his social inheritance, grave and insur mountable difiiculties are often believed to exist in the way of introducing the subject of religion into the public school. These difficulties seem to me to be largely gratuitous and avoidable. They are created, on the one hand, by a somewhat stiff and one-sided concep tion Of religion itself, and, on the other. Excerpt from Religious Education and the Public School: An American Problem At the meeting of the Inter-Church Conference in Carnegie Hall, New York, in November, 1905, at which twenty-nine Protestant Churches of America were represented, one of the papers treated the question of Weekday Religious Instruction. Its main proposition was favorably received, and the following resolution was adopted by the Conference: Resolved, That in the need of more systematic education in religion, we recommend for the favorable consideration of the Public School authorities of the country the proposal to allow the children to absent themselves without detriment from the public schools on Wednesday or on some other afternoon of the school week for the purpose of attending religious instruction in their own churches; and we urge upon the churches the advisability of availing themselves of the opportunity so granted to give such instruction in addition to that given on Sunday. The further consideration of the subject was referred to the Executive Committee. By direction of this Committee a report on Week-day Instruction in Religion was presented at the First Meeting of the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America, held in Philadelphia in 1908. Excerpt from Bibles and Religions Out Versus in the Public Schools Wherever the home and school have been secularized the results have been salutary and satisfactory. Secular schools would beno blind experiment with us. In several countries, public education has been secularized and no kind of religious instruction is allowed in the public schools. This is true of France, of some of the States of Germany, and some parts of Switzerland and Holland. While the results are favorable, and more than could be reasonably expected under the circum stances, the test of secular teaching and training so far has not been a fair one, because there is the counter vailing influence of the error and superstition which are imbibed by the child at home and at the church - from parent and priest. How the proper teaching of reading, writing, arith metic, grammar, geography, etc., and the co-incident inculcation, by precept and example, of kindness, honesty, truthfulness, industry and all the moral virtues, can possibly lead to vice and crime, Rev. John Langtry failed to explain. That a purely secular system of education and training can turn out a better citizen for this world (however it might be about the hypothetical next) than is now being turned out by the home, the Sunday school, the Separate school, and' the quasi-religious public school, only remains to be tried here to be demonstrated. Excerpt from The Duke School of Religion Bulletin, 1936, Vol. 1 It is with great satisfaction that we issue the first number of The School of Religion Bulletin. It marks the realization of a long desired means of communication between the School of Religion and its alumni and friends. The definite beginning of the project was a request from the members of the Class of 1929 which was presented to the School of Religion faculty on May 10, 1932, that some steps be taken in order to have a closer contact between the faculty of the School of Religion and its alumni. It was suggested that a monthly communication be sent from the faculty to the graduates of the School of Religion. The faculty asked the dean to confer with Mr. Henry R. Dwire, director of Public Relations and Alumni Affairs, regarding the feasibility of such a publication, after making investigations as to the practices of other seminaries. On January 11, 1933, the dean reported that he had corresponded with various theological schools on the subject but that, on account of the lack of funds for carrying out the suggestions offered, he was unable to report any progress. The faculty asked that further investigations be made. At the next meeting of the faculty on February 8, 1933, the dean reported that Mr. Dwire had placed at the disposal of the School of Religion space in the Alumni Register which the faculty might use for the purpose of informing the alumni of the School of Religion, as well as other alumni of the University, concerning the School of Religion. In accordance with this offer at times during the next two years several articles about the School of Religion were printed in the Alumni Register. In the fall of 1934 the Executive Committee of the Alumni Association of the School of Religion planned for the publication of a bulletin of the Association. Excerpt from The Religious Education of Adolescents In selecting and preparing the material for this little volume, the author has intentionally avoided the exclusively academic and scholastic point of View. The needs Of parents, teachers and other adult leaders, who are facing practical problems, have been kept in mind. Indeed, many of the paragraphs were written for the express purpose Of answering questions which had been asked by per sons who were facing perplexing situations in their own homes or schools. During the past three years, the author has delivered several short courses of lectures in con munity schools Of religious education and in sum mer schools on such subjects as: The Psychology Of Adolescent Boyhood, The Religious Nurture Of Adolescent Young People, The Psychology of Religion, and Principles and Methods Of Recrea tional Leadership. As collateral reading in these courses, one monograph Of a series Of pamphlets formerly published by the American Institute of Child Life Of Philadelphia: The Government Of Adolescent Young People, prepared by William Byron Forbush, was used. The demand for it soon exhausted the third edition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Religious Education: A Comprehensive Text Book This Text Book is the outcome of a wide demand for a complete Handbook, covering fully all phases of Religious Education in the Church. There was no such book hitherto extant. It took a library of some thirty or more volumes to cover the necessary field, as laid down in the Standard Course for teacher-training set forth by the Joint Commission on Sunday Schools. Such reading was overwhelm ing, unnecessary (for often but a few pages or precepts of a writer applied directly to Religious Education), and costly in the purchase of so many volumes. The author prepared a smaller book, Sunday School Teaching, a compilation of authorities covering 175 pages, in 1903, which has gone through three large editions in five years, being the Guide Book for the training of several thousand Sunday School teachers, of all religious bodies. Even day school educators found it suggestive and illuminat ing. It will be continued in the market. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It immediately became a famous gathering place for religious and educational conferences. There are twelve hundred and fifty acres in the holdings of the Lake Junaluska Assembly, Inc. The beautiful lake alone covers two hundred and fifty acres. Much progress has been made in recent years in the development of the property. Today Lake J unaluska is often referred to as the summer capital of Methodism. Excerpt from A Child's Book of Religion: For Sunday Schools and Homes A few 'words are necessary to explain the purpose of this little book, and the way in which it may be used to the best advantage. The author has thought it wiser to make a collection of materials for worship and instruction than to arrange a formal series of services or lessons that might interfere with freedom of selection and combination on the part of the teacher or superintendent.
