Excerpt from Recollections of the Pioneers of Lee County When a stranger taps at our door we naturally expect to be told his name and errand, and if he wishes to become an inmate of our home, something of his history. To those, therefore, who care to become better acquainted with this little book, we will tell something of its birth and parentage. The Lee County Columbian Club, in common with others throughout the entire state, was organized by an officer of the Illinois Woman's Expo sitiou Board - tor the purpose of opening communication with all parts of the county, of securing, for the various departments of the great expo sitiou any and every item in our county which would add to its interest or give evidence of the history, growth, resources, culture, or natural feat ures of the county. Also to facilitate communication with the State Board; to encourage the study of the Exposition; awakening interest and enabling us to enjoy it more intelligently. At one of our earliest meetings Miss Elizabeth J. Shaw spoke with much earnestness of the great historic events which are connected with Lee County, making ita point of interest not only to the state, but to the nation. This led to her being requested to prepare a sketch of those events, for the instruction and entertainment of the Club. Excerpt from History of Lee County, Together With Biographical Matter, Statistics, Etc: Gathered From Interviews With Old Settlers, County, Township and Other Records and Extracts From Files of Papers, Pamphlets, and Such Other Sources as Have Been Available In the writing of the general county history Dr. Cochran has had the advice and constant counsel of many of the early settlers of the county, to whom the manuscript was submitted and by them approved and while there may be some mistakes, it is thought that it would hardly be possible, after so many years with nothing to depend upon for many of the facts but the memories of the early settlers, that it is as nearly correct as it could possibly be made. Certain it is that at no time in the future could such a work be undertaken with circumstances so favorable for the production of a reliable record of the early times of Lee county. The township histories, by E. S. Ricker, Prof. J. H. Atwood, C. F. Atwood, and others, will be found full of valuable recollections, which but for their patient research must soon have been lost for ever, but which are now happily preserved for all ages to come. These gentlemen have placed upon Lee county a mark which will not be obliterated, but which will grow brighter and broader as the years go by. General Lee was a prolific writer, seemingly writing letters almost every day of his life, although he never really wrote his own memoirs. This book presents an extraordinary historical account, which allows us to learn the personality of the great Confederate leader through his everyday actions, like walking with his favorite dog or talking with his family members.
