Excerpt from Radio for All IN writing the present volume the author has continually had in mind a book for the public at large, not acquainted as yet with the radio art. After having reviewed nearly all the recent books on radio that have appeared since radio took the public's fancy, the author believes that the present volume covers ground not touched upon by other writers. The keynote of the book has been simplicity in language, and simplicity in radio. This book, therefore, is not a technical volume, and wherever possible all technicalities, all mathematics, and all abstruse sub ects have been left out entirely. It will also be noted that the author has not made use of the word ether in this book; for the reason that modern scientists are no longer in sympathy with the ether theory. The vacuum tube, it will be noted, has been touched upon very lightly and only where it was absolutely necessary. The reason is that the vacuum tube is a highly tech nical sub ect, and therefore does not belong in this book. It is a science by itself. Excerpt from The 40 Year March of Radio The story I try to tell you is the romance of a fast moving era's precocious and Versatile child, famil iarly called 'radio' in America and called 'wireless' in England. Implicit in radio's every adventure is the wider story of constantly increasing momentum in the scientific and industrial accomplishments that change and enrich our daily lives. We take speed so much for granted today that we cannot realize how much the momentum of achievement in nearly every field has increased, until we look into the past. Excerpt from Radio for the Beginner The usefulness of radio to the average person has not been realized; its present popularity is merely a start in the right direction. It is easily conceivable that the next decade will see every home with a radio telephone; not replacing the regular telephone, but supplementing it by permitting the owner to hear broad cast concerts, news, special bulletins and such information, even from other cities. It will be a particular boon to persons living in the country or in small towns. The radio telephone will do as much towards placing community life in close communication as telegraphy, both wire and radio, has done to place the nations. Excerpt from The Outline of Radio Perhaps you are tired of hearing about radio. For a year or two the newspapers have been full of it; magazines have run story after story about it; new books and new periodicals have been Spreading the superstitions (and occasionally the gospel) of radio. Possessing not only inherent merit but also a lively appeal to the imagination, radio has grown riotously. The tremendous fas cination of stretching out one's personal contacts far enough to intercept wireless messages arriving, over continents and high seas, from points hun dreds or even thousands of miles distant, has at tracted millions of people all about the world to the study of radio. Excerpt from Radio in Wartime Radio is a friendly business. But it has been my observa tion that radio likes itself almost to a fault. From that point of view, it bears a strong family resemblance to the show business which fathered it. But more than a decade of close association with radio in all its whimsies leads me to suspect that radio can afford to throw away the mirror and look at itself in the flesh. As a crystal set, radio was a novelty and it had some leave to cut a caper or two. Now radio has long passed its majority, and, while it may regret that it was never spanked in its youth, it may not be amiss for it to sit down soberly in the confessional and look for absolution. It would be presumptuous to pretend that this book speaks for the conscience of radio. That might beg the question, for who is to say whether radio has a conscience. Certainly the literature of radio cannot be called on to prove it. Nowhere does radio's Narcissus complex show to prettier advantage than in its own published works. Sometime that has to come to an end, and what better time than now, when radio faces a man-sized wartime responsibility? Excerpt from Radio Telephony for Amateurs Truly Of the making Of many books there is no end and in view Of the large number Of radio books already existant and advertised as in the process Of preparation or printing, perhaps some justification is necessary for the appearance Of another. My apologia is a simple one, and possibly one engendered by ideas and aspirations not un familiar to all other radio amateurs. Since connecting up my first receiving apparatus in 1908 I have longed for the appearance of a certain type Of radio book; a book issuing preferably from the pen Of an amateur, radiating the true amateur Spirit Of inquest and investigation, a book chock full Of practical information and suggestions for new things to do and instructions for going about it, in a word, a book which would at once ignite the spark Of my enthusiasm and furnish the material for its combustion. Such a book has never appeared, nor ever shall for the great majority Of us, for we have all our own ideas as to what the ideal radio book for amateurs Should be like. But intercourse extending over a number Of years with kindred spirits and frequent discussions with them on this subject has induced the belief that in the main our ideas converge in a common channel. This book represents my conception Of the direc tion and breadth Of this channel. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
