"Freedom to debate is essential to the development of critical thought, but on university campuses today free speech is restricted for fear of causing offense. This book surveys the underlying factors that circumscribe the ideas tolerated in our institutions of learning"--
Yes, you can publish for free. The industry has changed. You have the tools available to publish a high quality book without having to pay thousands. Today's authors are no longer dependent upon getting the approval of big publishing houses in order to get their work into the hands of the public. Nor do independent authors have to pay for publishing. Most presses set book prices at inflated rates, almost guaranteeing a poorly selling book. With tools like CreateSpace and Kindle Direct Publishing, authors can publish with no upfront costs, and market books at very competitive prices. This book will take you step by step on configuring your manuscript with Word, and putting the world's largest bookseller to work for you!

***ReViewed, ReVised, ReEdited, & RePublished on June 14, 2015.*** This update includes a case study of a successful, self-published author who took 20 years to get published. The case study is called, "Maids of Misfortune", and it was added as an appendix. Also, updated statistics from the publishing industry and various experts are referred to throughout the book where appropriate. This book is a journey. It is told as a story, set in its historical context of what it means to do something you have never done before. I invoke the names of people who have achieved great things by teaching themselves what they needed to know. You are in good company, with presidents and poets, generals and soldiers, rich men and poor men, Nobel Prize winners, artists, architects, inventors and scientists. True, some of these people were geniuses, but most were just common men and women like you and me. If they did it, so can we. The one thing they all have in common with you and me is that they had to teach themselves. Like you and me, they were autodidactic. No matter how frustrated they became, they stayed focused on their goals, and ultimately, achieved them. Why? Because they never gave up, even when it took 20 years, they never gave up. You and I are in good company, so we won't give up when we run into difficulties. Self-publishing is highly skilled, technical work, even for people who know what they are doing. For you and me, it is a daunting, challenging task. We must be inspired, we must be motivated. If you are like me and most other people, your first try at self-publishing will be frustrating. Ask other people to help you when you need it. It's not an admission of failure, it's a sign of wisdom to ask for help. Just never give up, and you will succeed. Perseverance will take you from an elementary, basic skill level to an advanced, highly skilled level. Patience, with yourself, is needed. As time goes on, you will get better and better at self-publishing. I guarantee it. I have given you a set of tips and principles that helped me when I first began. They will be worth your time to reflect on. Remember, if we can connect to the stories of the people who came before us, and were successful, then we can be successful also. The information in the book is complete and thorough. Like the previous edition, I used the self-publishing steps in the book to self-publish this book. Anytime you feel like something is missing, or incomplete, understand that I have given you all of the information that I used to publish this book. This title was first published in 2000: The essays in this collection re-examine the phenomenon of "free print" in print culture. By focusing on free print the volume offers perspectives in the cultural history of textual transmission from the early-18th century to the mid-20th century. "Publishing" in the sense of making the print public, embraces the free and often unsolicited distribution of religious literature, political propaganda, and civic and personal gifts. The free print examined here includes gift-books; advertisements and commemorations; the promotion of knowledge, institutions and services; commercial and philanthropic lobbying; religious and missionary activity; and political propaganda both official and underground. Broad issues range from the consideration of press finances, government intervention, and private and institutional patronage, to textual familiarity and social ritual. The approach is deliberately comparative. Ten established scholars of book and printing history, who look at very different regions and periods, test the nature of the alleged authority of print and the apparent value of the commercial tag through the study of print which arrives unbidden in the hands of its consumers. The chapters in this volume are based on papers first given at the "Print for Free" conference organized by the Cambridge Project for the Book Trust in September 1996.
