Excerpt from The Seven Purposes: An Experience in Psychic Phenomena After the beginning of the war, however, when interest in the possible survival of the individual was so suddenly and pathetically increased, and one heard on every hand of attempts to establish communication with those gone before, I resolved to experiment again with planchette; but it was not until our friend V expressed a desire to try it with me, sometime in 1917, that I really bought one. For almost a year it lay untouched in its box, and when finally we found opportunity to test it we had no success. It did not move from the spot where we placed it, and I made no attempt to try it alone. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Psychology of the Great War One of the plainest lessons taught by history, and one of those most substantially verified by. The present war, is that nations are not ruled by realities, but by the more or less illusory ideas which they form of these realities. The truth about an historical event may be revealed fifty years after it has taken place, but is seldom known at the time of its occurrence. Excerpt from Neither Dead Nor Sleeping EF ore venturing to offer a slight comment upon Mrs. Sewall's strange manuscript, the writer feels that to make clear his own neutral views upon the subject of psychic phenomena might be well in point. Therefore, they may be assembled, from a previous expression of them, to stand as fol lows: We are dwelling in the night. To the man of ten thousand years hence, who will not be able to distinguish through his archeological researches which of the forgotten tribes fought the Great War that left the long line of bones in the subsoil from the Channel to the Alps - to that enlightened modern we shall seem to have been formless gropers in the dusk of ignorance. The War of the Gods of Addiction, based on the correspondence between Bill W., one of the founders of Alcoholics Anonymous, and Swiss psychiatrist, C.G. Jung, proposes an original, groundbreaking, psychodynamic view of addiction. Using insights from Jungian psychology, it demonstrates why the twelve steps of AA really work. It explores, through theoretical and clinical material, modern and ancient myths, and fairy tales, the crucial process of neutralizing the archetypal shadow / archetypal evil, an aspect of all true addictions. It also explains how dreams may be used in the diagnosis and treatment of addiction. This book bridges the longstanding gap between the mental health and twelve-step recovering communities in ways that significantly encourage mutual understanding and benefit. Excerpt from Military Psychiatry in Peace and War Notwithstanding the great opportunities for the study of mental disease arising under active service conditions during the late European War, little English literature on the sub ject has been published. Though it is more or less universally found that no special war psychosis exists, it has been evident that the environment and circumstances of warfare do tend to bring about certain mental reactions, which, though seen in other situations, are not there so common. Unfor tunately the exigencies of war-time precluded most medical officers from devoting time to special study, and my work, as seen in the following pages, has been the product of labour only possible at intervals of leisure now and again. The statistical work at a Clearing H05pital is fraught with much difficulty, for the following up of cases which were dis persed over various parts of the United Kingdom is not a task to be lightly undertaken. My medical work during the war has been exceptionally fortunate, in that I have been able to gain a wide experience of the manifold mental ah normalities met with. Previous to my post at D Block, Netley, I had charge of neurological wards, and I have had the privilege since of visiting all the War Mental H05pitals in France and Great Britain. My thanks are due to the War Office authorities for giving me official permission and grant ing me all facilities for those visits. To the various medical officers who so courteously tendered me all available informa tion, and thus helped in my work, I express my indebtedness. Excerpt from The Psychology of War And must therefore hope rather than promise. Perhaps, were it older, there might be no wars. It is with the confidence that that day of peace will be hastened by the diffusion of a psycho logical viewpoint that this essay has been written. There can be little claim for originality made, as its aim is to bring before the lay reader material and methods of investigation that are normally not available to him. With this some tentative formulations are given, which it is hoped may tend to correlate the hypotheses that are reviewed.
