In neither of them, however, has the writer of the present volume met with any new information which could have materially, if it all, improved it, had such been in existence at the time it was written. He need hardly acknowledge his great obligations to Dr. Mccrie's History of the q'ormation in Spain (the work above referred to), as nothing of any worth could be written on this subject, without being more or less indebted to that accurate and elegant work. The extent of these obligations is only partially indicated by the refer ences made to it in the foot-notes. Its chief use, however, has been to guide to the original sources of information, which have been consulted and fol lowed in nearly every instance referred to in the notes, and in many others where acknowledgment has not been deemed necessary.
