This proceedings volume contains 101 papers from an October 2002 meeting, detailing advances in case hardening processes, corrosion protection and tribological coatings, laser processes, characterization, modeling, quenching, nano-materials, thermal spray, residual stress, and manufacturing equipmen
The book contains papers from the twelfth in a series of biennial conferences, first held in 1993, on the topics of contact mechanics and surface effects and their interaction. In general, structural components fail by wear, corrosion and fatigue, that is to say affected and initiated by surface conditions. Consequently, it is often appropriate to modify the surface layer of a base material or coat it, so as to provide an enhanced performance or longer life. However, in many cases it is the combined effect of wear and corrosion that is damaging, contributing to complexity in determining the proper approach. The surface treatment chosen should be suitably related to the problem to be solved. The necessary thickness of the coating depends largely on the applied loading and environmental conditions. The papers in the book address novel protective layers for advances in sliding wear and low friction. The contents cover topics such as: Experimental and Measurement Tests; Surface Modification; Surface Problems in Contact Mechanics; Thick and Thin Coatings; Tribomechanics; Computer Simulation.

Quenching is one of the most fundamentally complex processes in the heat treatment of metals, and it is something on which mechanical properties and distortion of engineering components depend. With chapters written by the most respected international experts in the field, Quenching Theory and Technology, Second Edition presents the most authoritat
Given their growing importance in the aerospace, automotive, sports and medical sectors, modelling the microstructure and properties of titanium and its alloys is a vital part of research into the development of new applications. This is the first time a book has been dedicated to modelling techniques for titanium.Part one discusses experimental techniques such as microscopy, synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry. Part two reviews physical modelling methods including thermodynamic modelling, the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami method, finite element modelling, the phase-field method, the cellular automata method, crystallographic and fracture behaviour of titanium aluminide and atomistic simulations of interfaces and dislocations relevant to TiAl. Part three covers neural network models and Part four examines surface engineering products. These include surface nitriding: phase composition, microstructure, mechanical properties, morphology and corrosion; nitriding: modelling of hardness profiles and kinetics; and aluminising: fabrication of Ti coatings by mechanical alloying. With its distinguished authors, Titanium alloys: Modelling of microstructure, properties and applications is a standard reference for industry and researchers concerned with titanium modelling, as well as users of titanium, titanium alloys and titanium aluminide in the aerospace, automotive, sports and medical implant sectors. - Comprehensively assesses modelling techniques for titanium, including experimental techniques such as microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry - Reviews physical modelling methods including thermodynamic modelling and finite element modelling - Examines surface engineering products with specific chapters focused on surface nitriding and aluminising
This book will have the recent information on the developments in the emerging field of environmental-friendly coatings. Crucial aspects associtaed with coating research will be presented in form of the indivudual chapters. Close attention will be paid to include essential aspects that are necessary to understand the porperties and applications of the novel materials. Different methods and techniques of synthesis and charcaterization will be detailed as individual chapters. It will also discuss the characterization techniques used in the area of such coatings. there will be chapters that descirbe the current status and future prospects. The topics will be selected so they are easy to understand and useful to new scholars as well as advanced learners. No book has been written on this subject so far.
