Excerpt from Practical Sermons and Addresses The following Sermons and Addresses are published at the request of many of the friends and former parishioners of the venerable author. Dr. Lochman was pastor of Christ Lutheran Church for nearly half a century. During these years he preached many able and impressive sermons, some of which made a deep impression on his hearers, and have done much good. It was believed that a selection from these sermons would be very inter esting and edifying to the members of his former congregation, and to Christians generally. The book will be a memento of their former beloved pastor, who will thus continue to speak to them from the printed page, even after he shall have gone to his reward in heaven. Excerpt from Book of Sermons: Practical and Controversial The following discourses are published at the suggestion and by the solicitation of friends, and not because of any special merit the author attaches to them. Some of them were written years ago, and now appear again, slightly revised. Others have been recently written, and now for the first time appear in print. The sixth sermon is an address to young men by J. Randolph tucker, formerly attorney-general of Virginia, revised and amended by the author of this work. 'i regard it as the best lay sermon extant, and as largely contributing to the value of this book. The eighteenth sermon, by Bro. Geo. Plattenburg, is a very suitable one with which to close the volume, and is specially commended to the consideration of the reader. I have not written for the critic, but for the candid enquirer after the truth; and if I have sometimes seemed severe, I beg the reader to remember that truth is a two-edged sword, cutting both ways. Excerpt from Sermons on Practical Subjects Many of these sermons were delivered on sacra mental occasions, and all treat of important, practical, and experimental subjects. The language is plain, simple, and unaffected; and they appear well caleu lated to make an impression on that class of people, who occupy the middle ranks of life, who compose the majority in every congregation, and to whom they were originally addressed. Excerpt from Occasional Sermons and Addresses A number of the discourses contained in this volume have been previously in print. In publishing them with others the author has yielded to the request of friends, in whose judgment he has entire confidence. In this more permanent form it is hoped they may subserve the interests of education and true religion. The titles and the occasions on which they were deliv ered will sufficiently indicate their character. The author regrets that the pressure of public duties has not permitted him to give to these pages that thorough revision which would render the volume more worthy the attention of those who take an interest in these. Excerpt from Selected Sermons and Addresses Great care was exercised in making these selections from a vast amount of material. Many of these articles have never been published in magazine or pamphlet form. The selections are quite typical of their author, and represent a wide range of thought. They reveal his power in Scripture, his trend of religious thought, his knowledge of and interest in human affairs, and bring a live message to preacher and layman alike. The family of Dr. Ort, together with the faculty of Hamma Divinity School, have heartily endorsed this publication, and have placed at our disposal the material from which the selections were made. Dr. Ort held a warm place in many hearts. He was loyally devoted to his Church and College, and gave freely of his time and strength to serve their interests. Excerpt from Sermons on Practical Subjects, Vol. 1 The Sermons of the Reverend Robert Walker have long and justly enjoyed a large portion of Public approbation. Those which were published in the Author's lifetime acquired a rapid reputation. The Sermons which were added after his death, though deficient perhaps in the last polish of an intended publication, did not detract from his well-earned fame; and the whole Work has steadily maintained the respect which it at first acquired. The present Edition, in three Volumes, contains all the Sermons of Mr. Walker, which have appeared, either during his life or after his death - as well those which were published separately as those which were collected in volumes. Though there were neither striking incidents, nor much variety, in the life of the Author, the following facts will not be unacceptable to his friends. He was born in Canongate, where his father was minister, in 1716. He received a regular education at the University of Edinburgh. Happening to reside for a few months in 1737 with a clergyman in Galloway, he was licensed to preach the gospel by the Presbytery of Kircudbright. In 1738, in consequence of an unanimous call, he was ordained minister of Straiton, within the bounds of the Presbytery of Ayr. He always mentioned this situation with particular satisfaction, and considered the years which he spent at Straiton as among the happiest years of his life. In 1746 he was translated to the Second Charge of South Leith. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
