Until now the Fascia Distortion Model (in short FDM) has so far played no significant role in the treatment of infants. As our smallest patients haven’t any previously learned body language, a classical treatment according to FDM is virtually impossible. With adults it is possible to discuss their symptoms and indicate where the problem lies, this is more or less ruled out with infants. Here we have to rely rather on the results from the clinic and palpation as well as our experience with FDM. As we know as FDM therapists, FDM treatment is often accompanied by pain, but is also very successful. If our little patients have painful distortions then it is the least we can do but to try and relieve that pain. Unfortunately, this process is as painful for younger patients as for adults. Here, the question for therapists is whether such treatment is possibly incompatible with their consciences. In my view, it is almost a duty of the therapist, to relieve the infant from his suffering! Let's administer brief pain during treatment, knowing that in the end it is for the good of the child. Due to the great suppleness of the tissue in younger years, we can achieve a great deal of success within the first one or two treatments. This makes using FDM with infants so interesting. As with my first book, as also here, I will adorn myself mainly with false laurels. This work could only arise due to the help of some ingenious minds that have already set milestones before me in FDM therapy. My intention now is to filter the developments made by some renowned therapists and, together with my experience, implement this for the treatment of infants. Among the great therapists who have inspired me are Andrew Taylor Still, William Sutherland, Stephen Typaldos and Tom Esser. Especially through the latter did I discover my love of treating infants and children. For this, dear Tom, I retrospectively send you my sincerest thanks. I want to also thank my family who have not only seen little of me due to my practice and seminar activities but also due to my writing this book. I always had you in my thoughts! I hope all readers take pleasure in this book and also hope that I can remove the insecurities and fears about the treatment of infants and also present some worthwhile ideas. If we therapists don’t help children, then who will?

Why Does It Hurt presents a whole new viewpoint on the way our bodies work using FDM, the Fascial Distortion Model. Fascia is the fibrous connective tissue that permeates our bodies and holds everything together. Distorted fascia is often the cause of pain that may not respond to traditional treatments of physical therapy or anti-inflammatory drugs. Thanks to FDM, patients stooped over from chronic back pain now stand straight, and athletes sidelined with sprains quickly return to the game and perform as if nothing happened. Why Does It Hurt explains how, in case after case, FDM dramatically shortens healing time, reduces the need for tests and drugs, and restores movement and well-being to patients who had given up hope. Pain Science - Yoga - Life by Niamh Moloney and Marnie Hartman combines the neuroscience of pain with yoga philosophy and practice for pain care. Rooted in a foundation of evidence-based practice, Pain Science - Yoga - Life provides readers with scientific knowledge for the use of yoga as part of care for those in pain. It also provides practical application of this knowledge both on and off the mat through guided practices.Section One contains three foundational chapters:How pain works - deepening roots of pain science knowledgeYoga - roots of yoga and how it pertains to painAnd this too - shifting perspectives through mindfulness practiceSection Two covers key topics such as physical aspects, emotions, sleep, and more, and how these relate to pain. Each chapter has three sub-sections:1. Head space - a review of the pain neuroscience and yoga research2. Out of the head and onto the mat - translates information from Head space into an experiential practice on the yoga mat.3. Off the mat and into life - how to extend knowledge and practice into daily livingPain Science - Yoga - Life will appeal to healthcare and yoga professionals wanting to deepen their knowledge and skills in the use of yoga for pain. The combination of head space and practice sections will enable the reader to directly apply the information in the clinic or studio. This book may also appeal to anyone who has an interest in deepening their understanding of pain and using yoga to gain resilience over pain.

Grounded in scientific and clinical evidence, this highly illustrated new guide gives an introduction to the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders using the Fascial Manipulation (FM) method developed by Luigi Stecco – the foremost scientifically valid method of evaluating and treating fascial dysfunction. It describes FM’s history, anatomy and physiology of fasciae, indications and contraindications, mechanisms of action, and details of the subjective and physical techniques used to manage disorders. A Practical Guide to Fascial Manipulation focuses on concepts around evaluating the fascia based on functional testing, movement and direction in specific spatial planes, and the location of specific areas to treat safely. With an emphasis throughout on accessible practical information, the book is also supported by a website – www.guidefascial.com – containing procedural video clips and an image bank.

This book is the product of an important collaboration between clinicians of the manual therapies and scientists in several disciplines that grew out of the three recent International Fascia Research Congresses (Boston, Amsterdam, and Vancouver). The book editors, Thomas Findley MD PhD, Robert Schleip PhD, Peter Huijing PhD and Leon Chaitow DO, were major organizers of these congresses and used their extensive experience to select chapters and contributors for this book. This volume therefore brings together contributors from diverse backgrounds who share the desire to bridge the gap between theory and practice in our current knowledge of the fascia and goes beyond the 2007, 2009 and 2012 congresses to define the state-of-the-art, from both the clinical and scientific perspective. Prepared by over 100 specialists and researchers from throughout the world, Fascia: The Tensional Network of the Human Body will be ideal for all professionals who have an interest in fascia and human movement - physiotherapists, osteopathic physicians, osteopaths, chiropractors, structural integration practitioners, manual therapists, massage therapists, acupuncturists, yoga or Pilates instructors, exercise scientists and personal trainers - as well as physicians involved with musculoskeletal medicine, pain management and rehabilitation, and basic scientists working in the field. - Reflects the efforts of almost 100 scientists and clinicians from throughout the world - Offers comprehensive coverage ranging from anatomy and physiology, clinical conditions and associated therapies, to recently developed research techniques - Explores the role of fascia as a bodywide communication system - Presents the latest information available on myofascial force transmission which helps establish a scientific basis for given clinical experiences - Explores the importance of fascia as a sensory organ - for example, its important proprioceptive and nociceptive functions which have implications for the generation of low back pain - Describes new imaging methods which confirm the connectivity of organs and tissues - Designed to organize relevant information for professionals involved in the therapeutic manipulation of the body's connective tissue matrix (fascia) as well as for scientists involved in basic science research - Reflects the increasing need for information about the properties of fascia, particularly for osteopaths, massage therapists, physiotherapists and other complementary health care professionals - Offers new insights on the fascial related foundations of Traditional Chinese Medicine Meridians and the fascial effects of acupuncture

The Fascial Distortion Model (FDM) was introduced by the American physician Stephen Typaldos (1957-2006). In this model all injuries and other conditions causing pain or disability are seen as arising from specific distortions of the connective tissue. This highly illustrated and very practical text and manual covers in detail the theoretical framework of the model, and approaches to manual therapy treatment based on an understanding of the FDM. The authors systematically cover all disorders likely to be encountered by the therapist, and provide comprehensive guidance about when it is appropriate to use FDM and how best to employ these approaches in treatment. The book is therefore of interest and value to all practitioners who want to understand the FDM and to incorporate its techniques into their therapeutic practice. This is also a comprehensive textbook and manual for anyone studying on FDM courses and for specific qualifications.
