Said - I sit in the House of Commons for West Clare. I was elected by a majority of I am a native of county Fermanagh, and reside at Ennis killen. I am in business there, and have been twice chairman of the Town Commissioners, and president of the local branch of the Land League. I have found my business very seriously affected by the action of my political opponents. I have never been a member of any political secret association, either Orange or Fenian, but I have been a member of the Good Templars. (laughter.) I or anized the Land League in Fermanagh mainly, and a so in parts of Tirone and Monaghan. I was not paid a penny by the and League for doing that. Most of the people joined the Land League - a fair proportion of all sections, sects, parties, and communities. They were all respectable people. Do you think the Land League had anything to do with crime or outrage - Oh, not the slightest in fact, it was quite the other way. I have myself made a great many speeches in an port of the Land League movement. I very nearly a ways spoke in the pre sence of Government reporters. Only two of my speeches have been ut in evidence here. I have never either connive at or been connected with crime or outrage. Ireland in an Imperial World interrogates the myriad ways through which Irish men and women experienced, participated in, and challenged empires in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Most importantly, they were integral players simultaneously managing and undermining the British Empire, and through their diasporic communities, they built sophisticated arguments that aided challenges to other imperial projects. In emphasizing the interconnections between Ireland and the wider British and Irish worlds, this book argues that a greater appreciation of empire is essential for enriching our understanding of the development of Irish society at home. Moreover, these thirteen essays argue plainly that Ireland was on the cutting edge of broader global developments, both in configuring and dismantling Europe’s overseas empires.
