This booklet offers an introduction to the Palisades Sill along with its geochemical signatures which reveal the sill's plume source and geological history. Part I presents the Palisades Sill offering a discussion of the geologic history, trace element geochemistry, and discussion of the plume source for the sill's emplacement. The Watchung Mountains consists of three mountain ranges paralleling each other in northern New Jersey forming coincidental with the Palisades Sill. Geologic setting of the Watchung Basalt flows, glaciation, structure, stratigraphy of the adjacent rocks, and igneous activity are presented in Part II of this booklet. Part II discusses the Watchung Mountains and its geologic setting, glaciation, stratigraphy, and geologic age, upper Triassic eruptions in New Jersey, igneous activity and its geologic age, regional and local stratigraphic relations, nature and products of basaltic eruptions including sites of fissures, pre-eruptive character of the Newark Basin graben, surface character of the vesicular traps, and geologic processes of jointing systems. I began a blog called "Mid Sierra Musings”. It is mostly about my experiences in the central Sierras. There currently seems to be a vicarious thirst and large viewership for things related to self-sufficiency, wilderness living. There are 'reality series' programs like “Alaska The Last Frontier” and “Mountain Men”.I have the best of both worlds since I have all the conveniences of city living with quick access to the Sierra National Forest and both Sequoia/Kings Canyon (SeKi) and Yosemite an hour away. I can mow my lawn in the morning and be above 7,000' skiing an hour and a half later. There has been considerable interest in the photo essays I have posted on the blog and I decided to combine them in paperback book and Kindle formats. While I am not the stature of a John Muir, my intentions are similar. I want to introduce you to what is there for you to think about, to see, smell, hear and share with others. Even if it is not possible for you to get into the wilderness, it is an opportunity to see it through the eyes of an eye witness. May you be both edified and entertained.

Most of the early explorers of the Sierra Nevada were private individuals, rather than members of government expeditions. The more literate ones had accounts of their achievements published in newspapers and journals. Many of these wilderness travelers have been immortalized by having their names placed on mountains, lakes, and streams. Frank Dusy; Wales, Wallace, and Wright; Theodore S. Solomons; Bolton C. and Lucy Brown; Joseph N. and Marion LeConte; Lt. N. F. McClure; Cornelius Beach Bradley; James E. Hutchinson. In this volume are their personal stories. They are foremost among the few who pioneered the routes that are followed by so many at the present day.
