A Brief History of the Sikhs attempts to highlight that the inhabitants of Punjab have been free spirited, accommodating and companionate towards the peaceful settlers. But they were not accommodating towards the invaders from the north west. They accepted the new ideas like Sufism and the Bhakti movements with open arms. Out of the synthesis of the two, Sikhism was born. The Sikhs carried on their free spirited approach towards the Punjabi nationalism and onwards to uncompromising nationalist approach for the independence of India from the British slavery in 1947. Unlike other communities, the Punjabis fought against a common enemy not among themselves. The Punjabis have been hard working, honest, peace loving and pushing, irrespective of their ethnicity. The Muslims, Hindus and the Sikhs stood for the Punjabiat. That is what the, A Brief History of the Sikhs stands for.
History as a social science is arguably more self-reflective than associated disciplines in that family. Other social scientists seem to see little reason to look beyond the paradigm they are developing in the present times. Historians on the other hand, tend to depend on the cumulative process of the development of their craft and the fund of accumulated knowledge. Yet, while this is acknowledged in the practice of research, Historiography in itself as a subject of study has rarely found its place in the syllabi of Indian universities. Knowledge of Historiography is taken for granted when a scholar plunges into research. In an attempt to address this lacuna, the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) has planned a series of volumes on Historiography comprising articles by subject specialists commissioned by the ICHR. The first volume in the series, Approaches to History: Essays in Indian Historiography brings to the readers the first fruits of that endeavour. While the essays encompass areas of research presently at the frontiers of new research, scholars will also find the bibliographies accompanying the essays of significant appeal.

It explores the dynamics of religious interaction and conflict that points toward later developments of communalism and religious separatism still plaguing the subcontinent. Religious Controversy in British India reveals a world expressed in South Asian dialects that has been closed to many scholars and students of the subcontinent. During the nineteenth century polemical religious literature and those who wrote it mobilized groups and led them back to the "fundamentals." Sacred texts supporting movements were translated and made available in inexpensive editions. Even texts from the well established oral tradition were put into print. This process was often initiated in response to Christian missionary activity, a response that ultimately expanded to include other religions. In this book, scholars examine the writings of Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs responsible for significant changes within different communities and for a heightened sense of boundary-defining identity.
A number of studies of colonial Lahore in recent years have explored such themes as the city's modernity, its cosmopolitanism and the rise of communalism which culminated in the bloodletting of 1947.
