This book is both interesting and original. It uses a compilation of some Congolese Traditional Tales for teaching English by having recourse to modern teaching standards. These tales belong to the oral tradition: they have been transmitted from mouth to mouth. Parents or adults usually tell them to children in the evenings around a fire or under a starry blue sky. These tales have been reduced to the rank of simple folklore for a long time. But, thanks to this book, they have come out of darkness, have come to light, have been given their real value and can be let known to a large audience. This book shows that these tales are not told aimlessly; they have an educational objective in the sense that they inculcate in children's minds values and principles which will permit them to get along well with the members of their communities and teach them to be cautious, shrewd and wise enough to cope successfully with life's challenges.

Central Africa is at the core of the African continent. The nations that comprise this region are inhabited by hundreds of different ethnic or tribal groups. While there are many differences among these groups of people, there are also many similarities. Oral tradition has played a very strong role in the passing on of the stories of these people, which we refer to as folktales. These stories, told to children and shared in villages and homes, reveal a great deal about the thought and the culture of the people of this region. In many ways, they show the way people think and the values they possess. The stories in this children s book come from the people of the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the Republic of the Congo. Variations of these stories are found throughout Central Africa, where they are recounted in hundreds of other native languages. "

Reading Comprehension Passages: Congolese Tales, Student's Book, is a collection of eleven Tales from the Democratic Republic of Congo. They belong to the Oral Tradition. They have been transmitted from mouth to mouth to younger generations. They hand down traditions and customs from one generation to the next one. The protagonists of the tales are human beings, animals and objects. The animals take on human characteristics: greed, jealous, honest, empathy etc.The tales are told to children by adults in the evenings around a fire or under a blue and starry sky. They are not told aimlessly. Their objective is to inculcate in children's mind values which will enable them to have harmonious relations with the members of their communities, to be wise enough to cope successfully with life's challenges and situations. And so children are taught to take into consideration the recommendations and instructions of more experienced people, to be considerate to other people, to be humble, wise and cautious. They are rendered aware that, in life, every human being must be responsible of his deeds and will reap what he has sown. The tales also help children develop astounding capacities for memorization. Some tales are punctuated with songs. The latter help children to have the sense of rhetoric's and rhythm. This book is intended for students of English at advanced level. At the end of each tale, there is an English glossary, the aim of which is to help students to have a better understanding of the tales and to enrich their vocabulary. It also contains exercises which are in connection with the tales and the exploitation of which runs as follows: Comprehension questions; The reordering of some sentences closely connected with the tales; Lexis; Sentence completion; Discussion points and Creative writing skills.

"The Congo Basin in Central Africa harbors approximately one quarter of the world's rainforests. Second in size only to that of the Amazon, the heart of this rainforest is populated by communities whose lives are vastly different from much of the rest of the world. This stunning photo series is part of the Tales of Us project, which sets out to demonstrate that the powerful but fragile ecosystems and the mythologies of the peoples who call them home are inextricably linked. In this book, local Congolese living in the Mbomo District staged and enacted the oral history of the Congo for fine art photographer Pieter Henket under the canopy of the ancient rainforest from which these stories sprang." --Page 4 of cover.

Oral tradition has played a very strong role in the passing on of the stories of these people, which we refer to as folktales. These stories, told to children, and shared in villages and homes, reveal a great deal about the thought and the culture of the people of this region. In many ways, they show the way people think and the values which they possess. The stories in this childrens book come from the people of the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the Republic of the Congo. Most of them were told to me in Sango, which is the lingua franca of the Central African Republic. Variations of these stories are found throughout Central Africa, where they are recounted in hundreds of other native languages. By translating these folktales into French and English (both official languages of much of Africa), it is my hope to make them accessible to a larger population. Reading them, we learn that people from different cultures think differently, and in many ways possess values different than those to which many adhere. To discover what is different is not to determine what is right or what is wrong, but to learn to appreciate unique perspectives on life. If we approach what these stories have to tell us with an open mind and open heart, we will learn from them, just as children do.

The latest work from Harold Scheub, one of the world's leading scholars of African folktales, is the broadest collection yet assembled with tales from the entire continent of Africa, north to south. It brings together mythic, fantastic, and coming-of-age tales, some transcribed more than a hundred years ago, others dating to modern-day Africa. Scheub includes the work of storytellers from major African language groups, as well as many storytellers whose work is not often heard outside of Africa. This anthology offers a classroom-ready collection that should appeal to any scholar of African literature and culture. Realizing that these tales are part of a dying art, Scheub writes for the inner ear in everyone, bringing an oral tradition to life in written form.
