Optics of Excitons in Confined Systems provides an overview of research in semiconductors that exhibit resonance enhanced optical nonlinearities in the frequency range close to the valence-conduction band gap. The book is divided into the following sections: quantum wells, wires, and dots; superlattices; nonlinear optical properties of confined systems; and effects of external fields on confined systems. Topics range from fundamental theory to more applied aspects of excitons in confined sytems.

This volume investigates the theory of the effect of static electric fields on one-electron states in. nanocylindrical and nanospherical heterolayers and quantized semiconductor films. Homogeneous external electrostatic field for all these structures has been considered as a "universal" modulating factor. For structures with radial symmetry, a study on the influence of radial static field and the electric field of a charged ring on one-electron states is presented. Chapters focusing on homogeneous field effect on low-dimensional excitonic states in the quantized films and quantum wires - in both wide bandgap and narrowband semiconductors - are also included. Other contents include calculations weak, moderate and strong electric fields, quantum-mechanical approximation and perturbation theory, the quasi-classical approximation (WKB method). Readers will benefit from the varied methodological to the subject which gives them a concrete analytical framework to solve problems related to nanoscale semiconductor design. The reference should prove to be useful to academics and professionals working in semiconductor nanoelectronics research and development.

Membranes composed of amphiphilic molecules are highly flexible surfaces that determine the architecture of biological systems and provide a basic structural element for complex fluids such as microemulsions. Recently, a variety of new experimental methods such as X-ray scattering, neutron scattering, and atomic force microscopy have been used in order to study themolecular structure of these membranes. Their conformational behavior, on the other hand, is studied by optical and electron microscopy, which reveals that membranes in aqueous solution exhibit an amazing variety of different shapes. Several theoretical concepts are described suchas bending elasticity, curvature, and minimal surfaces in order to understand this polymorphism. These concepts are also useful to describe the behavior of membranes in complex fluids where they can build up hexagonal, lamellar, triply-periodic, cubic, and sponge phases. The contributions to this volume provide an up-to-date overview and describe thestate-of-the-art of this rapidly evolving field of research.

The main motivation for the organization of the Advanced Research Workshop in Belgirate was the promotion of discussions on the most recent issues and the future perspectives in the field of Solid State lonics. The location was chosen on purpose since Belgirate was the place were twenty years ago, also then under the sponsorship of NATO, the very first international meeting on this important and interdisciplinary field took place. That meeting was named "Fast Ion Transport in Solids" and gathered virtually everybody at that time having been active in any aspect of motion of ions in solids. The original Belgirate Meeting made for the first time visible the technological potential related to the phenomenon of the fast ionic transport in solids and, accordingly, the field was given the name "Solid State lonics". This field is now expanded to cover a wide range of technologies which includes chemical sensors for environmental and process control, electrochromic windows, mirrors and displays, fuel cells, high performance rechargeable batteries for stationary applications and electrotraction, chemotronics, semiconductor ionics, water electrolysis cells for hydrogen economy and other applications. The main idea for holding an anniversary meeting was that of discussing the most recent issues and the future perspectives of Solid State lonics just twenty years after it has started at the same location on the lake Maggiore in North Italy.
