Excerpt from Ontario High School Physical Geography The questions which follow many of the chapters are suggestive rather than exhaustive. They are intended to show the alert teacher one of the most satisfactory ways in which the work of a chapter may be reviewed through the application of its principles. Excerpt from High School Physical Geography IN order to fit this work for use in Canadian schools, some changes have been made in the order of topics and in the subject-matter. For this revision the authors are largely indebted to Professor A. P. Cole man of the University of Toronto, who has given the volume the benefit of his intimate knowledge of the geography and geology of the Dominion, substituting in every chapter pertinent examples and discussions in place of material which would have special value only in the United States. New chapters have been added, dealing with rocks, with the physical history of Canada, and with matters of elementary astronomy. For the chapters dealing with astronomy Professor C. A. Chant of the University of Toronto is responsible. The study of rocks is introduced before the processes are taken up in detail, and the account of the earth's relations to the sun is transferred to a point near the end of the book. Suitable substitutions have been made in the maps and half-tone illustrations. Not withstanding, these changes, the volume distinctly keeps its identity, and is issued in its new dress in the hope that it may be useful in geographic instruc tion in the High' Schools, Collegiate Institutes and Academies of Canada. The authors are specially indebted to Professors Cole man and Chant, and to the Canadian Pacific Railway Company for many of the illustrations used in this edition. Excerpt from First Book of Physical Geography IN preparing my Elementary Physical Geography, I attempted to present the subject in such a way as to put it forward in its more modern aspect, and particularly to include the new physiography, or science of land form. An effort was made to cover the entire ground in a very elementary way; but at once the difficulty arose that the field was so large, that even to present the subject in an elementary manner would require a good-sized book. To avoid this there were two things possible: one to omit some parts and curtail others; the other to com mence the consideration of some subjects with the assump tion that either the scholars knew the preliminary points, or that the teacher could explain them. Both of these methods of shortening the book were followed, but even then it grew to a size entirely too large for those schools in which the subject has a minor place. The result has been, that although this book has met with a success wholly unexpected, many teachers who wish to give instruction in the new physical geography, are unable to make use of it. It is partly in the hope of meeting the needs of these, that I have undertaken the prep aration of this smaller book, from which still other sub jeeta are omitted, but in which the attempt is made to start from the beginning, and make every topic thoroughly clear. Excerpt from Elements of Physical Geography There are good textbooks on physical geography, but there are many teachers and school departments not satisfied with any of them. The author has endeavored to meet the require ments of these teachers as far as such needs could be ascertained. With a subject as broad as physical geography there will al ways be lack of uniformity in the manner of presentation, as well (as in the subject matter. The subject is one which is undergoing many changes, and it is possible that both the teachers and the subject may be ahead of present textbooks in many particulars. Every class in physical geography should have more or less laboratory and field work associated with the textbook. One of the functions of the textbook not the only one, by any means is to serve as a handbook, which the pupil studies as an aid in the interpretation of what he sees in the labora tory. Excerpt from Elementary Physical Geography For some time there have been indications that new textbooks on physical geography are demanded; and in the report of the Committee of Ten this finds definite expression. In the preparation of this book, which has been in hand for several years, there is an attempt to meet this apparent demand; but for reasons which are obvious to many, it has not seemed wise to attempt to follow the somewhat radical suggestions which were made by the majority of the geography conference of the Committee of Ten. Therefore, while the physiographic side is given more prominence than is customary in works of this kind, this book attempts to only partly meet the Committees suggestions. In the preparation of the book, effort has been made to introduce new material, particularly in the illustrations, which are a prominent part of the book. Also, there has been an endeavor to make the book scientifically accurate, and to introduce the latest knowledge on the subjects treated. There are probably places in which this is not done, for the field is so large that much must be compilation; and the compiler is liable to fall into error. Excerpt from Lessons in Physical Geography This book has been written in the belief that physical geography is not only interesting and valuable in its sub ject matter, but is capable, when properly presented, of developing a scientific habit of mind. No attempt is made to discuss all the physical features of the earth, or those of any special region. The best type forms are selected and treated with sufficient fullness to give a clear and definite picture. From a study of the type general laws are developed, and the student is thus provided with a key for the solution of geographical problems wherever they may arise. Each topic is treated inductively. The essential facts are first given, and the student is then guided to a knowledge of their causes, significance, and results. This plan makes it possible to avoid in some degree the vague generalizations which are characteristic of most text-books. The student is in possession of a sufficient number of facts to enable him to see the basis and appreciate the value of the generalizations which follow. A large number of realistic exercises are introduced which appeal to the actual or possible experience of the student. They are designed not for the purpose of discovery but of realization, and to give some idea of the methods and possibilities of geo graphic research. These exercises include both field and laboratory work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Butler's Physical Geography The great advances made in geographical research during the past few years have placed Physical Geography among the essential studies. The volume which the publishers herewith present embraces the latest discoveries in geographical science. In the chapters on Vulc'anology, Ocean Hydrography, and Meteorology, there is much new material which has never before appeared in a school text-book. The contents have been so arranged that the leading principles are found in the text, while other relevant matter of instructive nature has been placed in the notes. By this arrangement clearness of statement has been obtained, which makes the volume adaptable to schools of all grades. Acknowledgments are due to the U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, the U. S. Geological Survey, and the U. S. Hydrographic Office, for valuable information. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
