This book is a memoir of breaking the generational cycle of familial mental illness and dysfunction. Ms. Foman was abandoned by her mother at 11 years old and her world crumbled. Her mother then turned to a life of drugs and self- gratification. Her father dove into a new marriage just after the divorce and turned to dealing with his problems by drinking alcohol which led to his alcohol addiction. Thankfully, her father found sobriety later in life, but her mother remains an active drug user. As a result of her confusion, Ms. Foman turned to a life of promiscuity, drinking and got pregnant at 18 years old. She married a man similar to those examples she saw as a child. As this young woman was consumed with understanding why her life was so consumed with drama, she set out to understand and this journey took over 20 painful years. Ms. Foman left her first abusive marriage and went back to get a GED after dropping out of high school. She then went onto community college. When she discovered that education was providing some answers to her burning questions, she continued to go onto college and against all odds was accepted to the University of North Carolina Law School. At the time of acceptance, Ms. Foman was a welfare recipient and had little in the way of family support. Just after entering law school, her mother was convicted of felony trafficking cocaine and began serving a jail sentence. Ms. Foman graduated from law school, but was headed for the worst pain of her life; her son's battle with his demons. While she had been learning how to function in her new world, Ms. Foman failed to teach her child how to love and be loved and he struggled with acceptance. He was diagnosed with ADD at an early age and eventually with bi-polar disorder and drug addiction which resulted in two near death suicide attempts. In the background several "unmentionable" subjects are addressed. Ms. Foman grew up in an intolerant religious society and amid the racism of the Southern portion of the United States. She gives a vivid picture of what it was like to grow up in a white family that thought nothing of referring to those of different races, religions or sexual preferences in a demeaning manner. This warped thinking had been passed from generation to generation. Not only did her family teach this type of thinking, but the world around her supported the ideology. Ms. Foman shares her story in a brutally honest way in order to convey the plight of families that are plagued with generations of mental issues and how they struggle to survive in the world at large. She advocates for people to be able to share their problems with others in order to move beyond them so they can discover the hidden talents and fulfill their purpose in life. Her story will give hope to many that feel that their circumstances define them and keep their hidden talents suppressed. Despite the circumstance, talking to someone and getting it out is powerful...so powerful that it can help a person let it go and move on so that he or she can offer the world their gifts within.

Your hard work is paying off. You are doing well in your field. But there is something standing between you and the next level of achievement. That something may just be one of your own annoying habits. Perhaps one small flaw - a behaviour you barely even recognise - is the only thing that's keeping you from where you want to be. It may be that the very characteristic that you believe got you where you are - like the drive to win at all costs - is what's holding you back. This book is not about one story of loss or one grief therapy approach. This book contains exactly what grieving couples have asked for: what they wanted to know in exactly your situation; what they have mentioned and pointed out they would need or would have needed in that horrendous time of loss. Books written by bereaved parents often follow the formula: "My life was beautiful, then my child or baby died and then my life was never the same again. I had to write a book about it." These books are usually self-therapy, rather than a way to help others. Books by therapists often talk about their work from a theoretical basis that lacks personal experience. They discuss people who experience complicated or chronic grief as opposed to encouraging the resilience that lies within each and every one of us. I have experienced the loss of a child and I am a grief therapist, but this book is not a memoir about my loss. Neither is it just a book written from the perspective of a therapist having worked with countless clients experiencing loss. This book focuses on the effect parental bereavement has on the parents and their relationship. It is about surviving loss as a couple and the re-emerging from grief into a life of joy and melancholy, laughter and tears, happiness and sadness. Not either/or but BOTH/AND. This book will, teach you understanding and acceptance of the grieving process each and everyone chooses. In a relationship, each partner is equally responsible to take part in sailing the ship together. Surviving Loss as a Couple is about how you can re-emerge from this crazy ride through the darkness of grief with renewed depth and understanding with your partner. This book is based on bereaved parents' needs, challenges and what they said has helped them, based on a worldwide survey I have conducted. It contains detailed descriptions of what has helped eighteen individuals and couples that I have interviewed, couples in varying situations and at different stages of their journey with grief.

Lessons from the Porchis Ed Poole's thoughtful memoir of life's lessons, which he shares with endearing charm and good-natured heart. The book is a thoughtful journey and an engaging reminiscence.Lessons from the Porchwill allow the reader to consider questions such as: Have you wondered how you arrived at your current stop along your journey? Have you ever asked the question, "What am I supposed to be learning from this experience?" How can I leave this world a bit better than it was when I found it? Although written about his own experience battling depression, the book is meant for anyone embarking on a journey to know themselves and cultivate new friendships. We all have places from which we learn life's lessons. For some it may be sitting beside a meandering stream. For this author, the place to which he returned to understand his journey was the porch that surrounded his house as he grew up. Metaphorically, Poole's porch represents how he either has or has not accepted changes in his life. The dilemma about how and when to leave his porch goes back to his early boyhood when his mom would always say, "Eddie, don't get too close to the edge of the porch, because you might fall off."

Looking at my daughter's wedding photographs five years ago, I noticed a matronly woman on the cusp of entering middle age. I have no intention of ending up looking like my mother or grandmother at that age, plump, not necessarily obese, was the order of the day. I decided to adopt the health, rather than weight control approach, and with my own philosophy in addressing image, weight and confidence issues, that afflict many. I hope by sharing my experiences with others will motivate them to take control of who they want and can be. When my mother died relatively young of a terminal illness despite her general well-being and love of life, especially her Chinese opera performances and travelling with her friends, it was almost our steady family was shaken up. At the same time my two growing children were exhibiting all the adolescence and teenage growing pains. It forced me to take stock and made phenomenal changes to our lives to keep my family intact. The journey to bring them up in the best way I know how, ensued a learning experience invaluable in my understanding of relationship and how powerful it can be to change lives.
