Dr. Mercer was one of the pioneer surgeons of Nebraska, having located in Omaha in 1866. He organized the first Omaha hospital in 1868 and the Omaha Medical College. The first class graduated in 1881. He was professor of surgery in the new college. Dr. Mercer had been an assistant surgeon in the Civil War to the 149th Regiment of Illinois volunteers. -- H.W. Orr.
