On the influence attributed to philosophers, free-masons, and to the illuminati Jean Joseph Mounier PREFACE, BY THE TRANSLATOR, ONE of the chief fources of misfortune, infeparably attached to times of revolution and of civil difcord, is the want of moderation in men of all parties. In fuch eventful periods as that in which we live, men choofe their party often they knownot why. and purfue with heat all the meafures of thofe with whom they afibciate themfelves, without reflecting whether they are called for by neceffity, whether they are confident with prudence, or warranted by juftice. Two men equally able and equally honeft, placed within the revolutionary vortex, may be determined by the flighteft circumflance, operating on their vanity, their pride, or their envy, and a 3 without without their being confcious of the caufe, to choofe oppofite courfes, and to purfue them with equal zeal and obftinacy; the one as a violent unbending anftocrat, and the other as an infolent unfeeling republican. But fuch extremes, on either fide, are not confident with unfullied virtue, or with pure notions of political and moral duty. Such however is the fact, that in times of commotion and of civil difcord, the bulk of men are generally thus arranged into oppofite and hoftile parties, and often become guilty of crimes, in maintaining the exaggeration of thsir refpective opinions, at the bare afpedt of which they would have fliuddered in times of tranquillity. In judging of the itate of parties, in inquiring into the caufes, the progrefs, and confequenct s of revolutions, impartial men muft e r have this general fact in view. But it is difficult even for the fpedatbrs of fuch fcenes as we have witnefled during the l

This book is an invitation to the secret world behind the veil of daily events. In its pages you will meet the legendary Cagliostro and the Comte de Saint-Germain as they travel through the royal courts and Masonic lodges of eighteenth-century Europe, fomenting Revolution and working to overturn the social order of their day. Alchemists, magicians, Illuminati adepts, mystics, and Freemasons joined forces with politicians, journalists, scientists, writers, philosophers and libertines in a movement that forever altered the cultural landscape of Western civilization. Inaugurating two centuries of revolution and upheaval, the French Revolution of 1789 put an end to the concept of the divine right of kings, led to the formal separation of church and state, destroyed the remnants of medieval feudalism, and heralded the values of the Enlightenment as the triumphant banner under which the modern world would be born. Yet it was accompanied by a level of violence whose ferocity spoke more of an exorcism than a political restructuring. What lessons does the Revolution hold for us today? Do the forces of secret societies and silent conspiracies continue to influence the world? Historian Una Birch's classic account was originally published in 1911. Her proximity to and sympathy with the events offer a unique perspective. Secret society expert James Wasserman has made this work accessible to the modern reader with extensive annotations, a history of the Revolution, an introduction that places the Illuminati in context, and biographical sketches of the main participants. In this work, Proofs of a Conspiracy, Robison laid the groundwork for modern conspiracy theorists by implicating the Bavarian Illuminati as responsible for the excesses of the French Revolution. The Bavarian Illuminati, a rationalist secret society, was founded by Adam Weishaupt in 1776 in what is today Germany. They had an inner core of true believers, who secretly held radical atheist, anti-monarchist and possibly proto-feminist views, at that time considered beyond the pale. They recruited by infiltrating the numerous (and otherwise benign) Freemasonic groups which were active at the time on the continent. Necessarily they had a clandestine, compartmentalized, hierarchical organizational form.

'Uproarious . . . [Phillips and Elledge] pair the abundant good humour of this book with a warning about the corrosive effects of conspiracy theories' The Times From the Satanic Panic to the anti-vaxx movement, the moon landing to Pizzagate, it's always been human nature to believe we're being lied to by the powers that be (and sometimes, to be fair, we absolutely are). But while it can be fun to indulge in a bit of Deep State banter on the group chat, recent times have shown us that some of these theories have taken on a life of their own - and in our dogged quest for the truth, it appears we might actually be doing it some damage. In Conspiracy, Tom Phillips and Jonn Elledge take us on a fascinating, insightful and often hilarious journey through conspiracy theories old and new, to try and answer a vital question for our times: how can we learn to log off the QAnon message boards, and start trusting hard evidence again? Praise for the Brief History series: 'Witty, entertaining and slightly distressing... You should probably read it' Sarah Knight, author of The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F*ck 'Brilliant. Utterly, utterly brilliant' Jeremy Clarkson 'Very funny' Mark Watson 'Both readable and entertaining' Telegraph
