Monte Carlo techniques are outlined for the numerical solution of the energy-dependent Boltzmann equation for neutrons or gamma rays, which significantly reduce the computer time required for Monte Carlo shielding calculations. This reduction is a maximum for calculations involving multi-energy source and/or interaction spectra and complicated source, shield, and system geometries. The Monte Carlo techniques include the use of energy independent biasing functions, energy-dependent samples which span the entire energy range of interest, and analytic integrations of the energy dependence of the differential angular-energy interaction cross sections. Typical numerical results obtained from the Douglas Monte Carlo computer program SOBER are presented to demonstrate the accuracy, flexibility and computational speed achieved through the use of these techniques.
