The lovely and descriptive writing entices the reader to read each chapter at first glance. The narrative begins when the early express trains from Montreal to Portland, Maine, get congested. Mr. Richard Gilbert, an attorney from New York, arrived five minutes early and found only one empty seat near the door. When Mr. Gilbert took over the place, a crusty old farmer grabbed the top and pushed it violently toward the window in anger. And Mr. Gilbert, pleased with himself for getting a spot near the stove, opened the soggy Montreal True Witness and settled down for a reading session. He opened the main article, read three paragraphs, and hadn't returned to it since. When the door opened, the March wind howled, the March rain poured in, and Mr. Richard Gilbert lifted his eyes to see a new passenger at the doorway. It was written by May Agnes Fleming, one of the first Canadians to achieve great success in her field as a well-known fiction author.

Romance and the Erotics of Property examines contemporary popular romance from a number of different points of view, probing for codes and subtexts that sometimes exploit and sometimes contradict its surface tale of romantic attraction, frustration, longing, and fulfillment. Cohn argues that a full understanding of the contemporary romance requires an investigation of its literary and historical sources and analogues. Three principal sources are examined in the context of women's history in bourgeois society. Pride and Prejudice, Jane Erye, and Gone With the Wind demonstrate the development of romance fiction's themes, yet in all three the central love story is complicated by issues of property, the sign of male power. Jan Cohn further considers the development of the genre n the fictions of Harriet Lewis and May Agnes Fleming, prolific and popular American romance writers of the late nineteenth century who developed the role of the villain, thereby bringing into focus the sexual and economic struggles faced by the heroine. Romance and the Erotics of Property sets romance fiction against a historic and literary background, arguing that contemporary romance disguises as tales of love the subversive fantasies of female appropriation and male property and power.

The 1867 Canadian confederation brought with it expectations of a national literature, which a rising class of local printers hoped to supply. Reforming copyright law in the imperial context proved impossible, and Canada became a prime market for foreign publishers instead. The subsequent development of the agency system of exclusive publisher-importers became a defining feature of Canadian trade publishing for most of the twentieth century. In Dominion and Agency, Eli MacLaren analyses the struggle for copyright reform and the creation of a national literature using previously ignored archival sources such as the Board of Trade Papers at the National Archives of the United Kingdom. A groundbreaking study, Dominion and Agency is an important exploration of the legal and economic structures that were instrumental in the formation of today's Canadian literary culture.
