Excerpt from New Physical Geography As aids to the study of the text, a brief Summary is given at the close of each section, and a Topical Outline and a set of Review Questions are placed at the end of each chapter. It is believed that the great majority of teachers will wel come these aids. No teacher will, of course, be content to follow the questions absolutely and without modification; the individuality of the teacher will appear here, as else where. But these summaries, topics, and questions cover the essentials in the text; and their use as a basis for work, with such modifications and additions as may be deemed necessary, will be a far lighter task than the production of an entire series by the teacher. Thus, relieved of a form of drudgery, time will be available for the expenditure of energy in more profitable lines. Excerpt from Warren's New Physical Geography Under these conditions it has been considered advisable to prepare a new book, in which the facts and phenomena of the physical world are presented in the light of recent scientific investigation, while such methods of treatment are employed as have for more than thirty years maintained the popularity of the original treatise. Excerpt from First Book of Physical Geography IN preparing my Elementary Physical Geography, I attempted to present the subject in such a way as to put it forward in its more modern aspect, and particularly to include the new physiography, or science of land form. An effort was made to cover the entire ground in a very elementary way; but at once the difficulty arose that the field was so large, that even to present the subject in an elementary manner would require a good-sized book. To avoid this there were two things possible: one to omit some parts and curtail others; the other to com mence the consideration of some subjects with the assump tion that either the scholars knew the preliminary points, or that the teacher could explain them. Both of these methods of shortening the book were followed, but even then it grew to a size entirely too large for those schools in which the subject has a minor place. The result has been, that although this book has met with a success wholly unexpected, many teachers who wish to give instruction in the new physical geography, are unable to make use of it. It is partly in the hope of meeting the needs of these, that I have undertaken the prep aration of this smaller book, from which still other sub jeeta are omitted, but in which the attempt is made to start from the beginning, and make every topic thoroughly clear. Excerpt from Physical Geography: Prepared on a New and Original Plan Geology is the ancient history of the earth. It is the science which determines the chronological succession of the great forma tions of the earth's crust, and investigates the causes of its present surface features; it further treats of the materials composing the earth's substance, and of the development of life upon our globe as recorded in its rocky framework. Excerpt from New Complete Geography We have decided to teach these features objectively on a plan that has been highly commended. For instance. Instead of devoting two or three pages of text to the origin of mountains. A subject in which the average child takes no interest, we give in the general presentation of the physical geography of the earth four pictures of mountains, and under each picture give a brief description of the origin and character of the formation. The same course has been followed with reference to other physical features. The pupil will read these descriptions because of his interest in the picture, and will remember them for life because of their association with it. Excerpt from Physical Geography A careful study of physical geography tends to lead the mind to the conclusion that the great geographical constituents of our planet the solid land, the ocean, and the atmosphere 7 are mutually de pendent and connected by incessant action and reaction upon one another; and hence, that the Earth is really a wonderful mechan ism, all parts of which work together harmoniously to accomplish the purpose assigned to it by an All-wise Creator. Excerpt from Elementary Physical Geography In the preparation of the book, effort has been made to introduce new material, particularly in the illustrations, which are a prominent part of the book. Also, there has been an endeavor to make the book scientifically accurate, and to introduce the latest knowledge on the subjects treated. There are probably places in which this is not done, for the field is so large that much must be compilation; and the compiler is liable to fall into error.
