In the tradition of Jack Kerouac’s On the Road and set during the intersection of the radical ’60s and the mellow ’70s, ride along with a recent UVA grad as he hitchhikes cross-country and back with only $20 in his pocket and meets colorful characters from Kansas City to Haight-Ashbury, with detours including a harrowing escape from a Tijuana jail. With the Vietnam War raging and the race riots waning, young Preston took off to travel the country to prove to himself and the world that he could make it in a world that was still not at peace with itself. The risk of being mistaken as a draft dodger or hippie and mistreated as in Easy Rider loomed in the back of his mind even though he not only did not look the part but was totally opposed to their ideas. This added political risk to the usual dangers of thugs and criminals that hound anyone traveling alone and in unsavory places due to lack of funds to pay for safer accommodations. This story is about a twenty-one-year-old college graduate who had dreamed since childhood about one day seeing the USA. During his years at UVA, his interest was piqued after hearing stories from two older fraternity brothers. They had apparently driven to California, found work, and returned home at the end of the summer. They were rich by his standards since they had saved four times the amount of money that he could even make for the same work in Virginia. After much thought, he decided that hitchhiking would be the only way to accomplish the mission. He looked for two years for a friend that would go with him but without success. Finally he realized that, if he were to go at all, he would have to go alone. Much soul-searching went into making the decision, but finally he decided that he could actually do it alone. Now his whole perspective changed. The trip would no longer be just about making money and sightseeing. It would be about sightseeing, adventure, challenge, and survival! To ensure that it would be what he wanted, he placed two restrictions upon himself. The first was to accept every ride offered to him. If he let the looks of the driver or the type or condition of the vehicle keep him from taking that ride, he might miss the greatest adventure of his life. That would completely defeat the purpose. In order to guarantee that he would have to be resourceful, he would limit the amount of money that he took with him to $20. As he moved about the country, he faced many challenges, including unsavory people, lack of money, and lack of safe overnight accommodations. In every instance, he adjusted to the situation, adapted, and overcame the particular problem. He returned home fifty-six days later with $14, having traveled ten thousand miles just in time to begin dental school. He is now a changed person. He firmly believes there is nothing he can’t do. Accounts of particular problems he faced and the solutions he rendered represent the bulk of the text. This is a true account of some of the events of his life. The maps within the text are copies of the original maps that he used in 1969.

One can not understand the Sixties without understanding the Fifties. The Fifties were the first time the American youth had excess freedom. Before the 50s they worked on the family farm; dusk till dawn, slaved in the sweat shops, 12 ours a day, six days a week; starved in the depression; and fought not knowing it they would be alive the next day in World War II and the Korean War. Than, suddenly, came the fifties. First there were the beatniks lead by their spiritual leader Williams Burrough, than the "bad boys of rock and roll Elvis, Johnny Cochran, and Jerry Lee Lewis prevailed. This excess freedom, led to freedom to think, freedom to question, freedom to challenge. In the sixties, the peaceful non-violent Civil Rights Movement, progressed to the Black Power and the Black Panthers. The Civil Rights Movement was followed by the creeping involvement in Vietnam, first with military advisors, than massive troop deployments to Vietnam resulting in death, violence, destruction, and then disillusion. And complementing the war, initially, the educational teach-ins led to massive antiwar demonstrations, to the Weathermen busting windows on Michigan Ave and planting bombs in the Capital. This all digressed to the " second civil war" which recently resurfaced with the Iraq War, I afraid now is progressing to the "third civil war". Throughout the book we follow the characters lives from romantic innocence to reality to Expressionism. Some fighting in Vietnam, some protesting the war, some marching for civil rights, friendships destroyed and than repaired. Some lives lost, some destroyed, some survived, but all caught up in the hubris characterized by a gross failure of governmental leadership. Those betrayed the most have their names on a black granite wall in Washington DC.

The title "14 Hands to Freedom" was created after the book was completed. The story itself has been told for years, and I always thought it would make a great book if I ever could get it down on paper. The timelines and families are true stories, but the adventures are my wild imagination of what could have happened. A story of a German cavalry captain, his men, their horses, and families being chased out of Russia with goals to live free in America. Threatened by King Nickolas II, a recently appointed czar, who was to eliminate all Germans that live in Russia. Captain derived a plan to get out of Russia, sail for America, and find freedom and homestead land in North Dakota. The story starts in 1896, as a cavalry captain and his men are sought out and then chased to the shores of the Black Sea. Captain hires two experienced English sailors, steals a Russian ship, and cleverly loads the entire community and their belongings onto the ship. They navigate the entire community of Germans from Russia to America. Battles with Russian soldiers, pirates, and winter storms harden the families, and battles of love, life, and happiness become all too real. Ten women become pregnant, and Captain struggles to keep balance between being a leader of men and a father of four teenage girls. Captain's two prodigies, the oldest and youngest, Mark and Glen, do everything they can to become cavalry men. Glen's horse is fourteen hands tall and races his way across America. Mark continues to shoot his way through, and the huge piles of money they win create even a bigger threat. Captain's men are called upon several times to save his family. The soldiers are then forced to become cowboys and form a wagon train. They travel through snowstorms, rough rivers, and outlaw attacks. They drive thousands of horses and cows through the Midwest fighting wolves, coyotes, and more and finally find their homesteads in North Dakota. 14 Hands to Freedom will make you laugh, and it will make you cry, but mostly, it will make you want to see what's next for Captain and his community of Germans from Russia!
